Can anyone tell me how to stop head butting and what it means please. My pony often head butts me which can be painfull!!!!!!! He does it when i try to brush his face so i assume he doesnt want me to do it? But will do it for almost any thing. He is, aside from this very well mannered on the ground. I often back him up when he does it. I am right in doing this, i am thinking it is down to a dominance thing - is that right?? Any tips please? xxx

Henry head butts too, will be interesting to see what peoples opinions are on it. He head butts me right in the chest and it does really hurt. He knows its wrong too, because afterwards he throws his head up and thinks I'm going to smack his face (???never done it, must be a past experiance he's had). He mainly does it when Im near him and chatting on the yard or when he's in his stable and im not paying him attention lol.

Ditto! I am afraid I have one of those 'Hey Mummy pay me some attention'

definately seems to be an attention thing, we used to do a quick jab with a finger and then leave it there. Ive not smacked because they expect it straight away cos they know its not desirable.

Head butting is bad manners, espceially when they have a bridle on and do the rubby thing - ouch! Mine are allowed to have a rub up my arm or back, once the bridle is off! They get poked and made to take a step back if they do it other times. I have to admit to being slightly paranoid though

Tiggy used to head butt me on my head! When I had concussion it really was not appreciated! So one day, after a really good crack across the top of my head, she got slapped on the neck/chest and yelled at and she never did it again.
