Hi ~ I need to buy a head cam, buying for a clueless husband for his wife & I want to know what makes are good! He has a budget of £80 - £100 which must include everything including the sd card you need for it! Can you lovely people point me in the right direction as I've seen Go-pro's are a lot more expensive.
thankyou in advance xx

Headcamz look very good. Had a nice conversation with Paul Tapner at Badgers, they had two clips from a XC on 2 different horses - one Go Pro and the other Headman (was split screen). No difference really in quality but about,£300 difference in price.

I still haven't got around to buying one though!

I prefer the size of the hedcamz too, it's much smaller and less weighty. There was a pic of a rider wearing a go pro - it looks huge.

There is research to suggest that a helmet mounted camera can significantly impact the performance of the hat in a fall - leading to severe injuries. Its early days research - but has led BE to ban hat mounted cameras on safety grounds. Even if not competing BE it is an issue worth thinking about! You can get cameras which are body mounted - we have a Muvi. You have to get used to where on the BP, jacket or whatever to fix it but once you get used to it it is very easy to use. And the viewpoint doesn't swing wildly when the rider moves their head!

That's interesting.

There have been similar questions asked in the world of cycling (my other sport), and many of the top helmet manufacturers have said that safety is not compromised, but that is mainly because the adhesive type camera mounts that most people use will easily fall off if, in the event of a fall, they contact the ground, tree etc.

Personally, I found a helmet mount a real nuisance when riding (bike) off road, as I had to allow another 4 inches above my head. I then tried a body mount which was a lot better to use and made the camera (Go Pro) a lot easier to operate too.

Re the mounting. Depends on your reason for wanting one. I primarily use mine to record traffic after being hit by a car last summer and them not stopping. I mount on my hat as I can turn my head to get the numberplate or action from another direction, this wouldn't be as easy with a mount elsewhere on the body. I did look into if it compromised the hat before I bought mine, noone had any evidence either way last year when I was asking. I went for a bullet style cam, velcro mounted to an elasticated hat band. I also have the hs1 and as soon as you knock the silk it flies off so decided on balance it is safer for me to use the camera than not.
