not strictly c and t, but how serious do you have to consider your head injury or any other injurtg before you head to a and e? I ask this as i had a fall earlier where i was knocked unconscious and wondering whether its a and e worthy or i should just sleep it off.

I think as you were unconscious, even if only briefly, it is worth getting yourself checked out, concussion can cause problems, if you feel drowsy that is natural but you need someone to be at home with you to keep an eye on how you are. I went in and was told to go home and rest but they insisted that someone checked every few hours, it is not something to take lightly you only have one head.

If you ever bash your head please get it checked out.

Look at that actors wife who bashed her head skiing but insisted she was alright. She went to bed that night never to wake up. It's not worth the risk.

I got knocked out last autumn, I wasn't out cold but kept repeating myself and couldn't get up for about 20 mins. Dont really remember much of it, other than having pins and needles all over, including my face/mouth and not being able to speak properly. Once I came to as it were i felt OK. My sis (nurse) checked me over and gave instructions to boyfriend, any odd behaviour, sleepiness etc to go straight to A&E. He wasn't happy with this so insisted i went anyway. 3 hrs later, they did a few, watch my finger exercises and sent me away with concussion. But as others have said, its better to be safe. I was just thankful i got out of the hospital without catching anything...they were dealing with an outbreak of the noro virus...

That would be Natasha Richardson, famous in her own right. ;)

But the point is valid - there have been many instances where people have literally walked away from even quite minor bangs and then collapsed later from bleeding. While in most cases there won't be much they can do but if there is something that needs doing, it can't wait and might kill you.

Natasha Richardson and Michael Schumacher were both OK initially after their accidents, personally I would be going to A&E just to be certain all OK

Have you been sick? Can you remember events up to the fall? One of the Guidelines that we use for head CT's are a trauma to the head with witnessed unconsciousness +vomiting /amnesia.
In all honesty though I would definitely go to A&E & get yourself checked over...there is no way I would even want to diagnose a potential head injury over the internet!

If you can, get someone to take you to A&E.

I've knocked myself out a few times, nothing major, never gone to get checked, but then I'm stupid :o BUT if I had felt weird AT ALL I would have gone straight to A&E.

I would go to a&e for a head injury and kick up a fuss. Insist on neuro checks etc. I was kicked in the head. Was never knocked out but ended up with an ostrich egg on my forehead and a face that resembled Joan Rivers!! Not attractive!! A&e didn't take me seriously and sent me home with paracetamol. 6 months later after several funny turns, falling asleep in lectures, severe headaches a private MRI revealed a serious head injury with damage due to swelling. I underwent emergency neuro surgery, 8 days high dependancy and 4 months or recovery. Your head is a precious thing and you cannot live without your brain. Get it checked out!!

Get checked! I landed on my head at Isleham, felt OK, went round the XC! 2 days later I went to A&E with splitting headaches - turns out I'd fractured my skull. I'm still getting headaches now (and the accident happened beginning of March) - my doctors have booked me in for another CT scan to check...

Don't mess with heads! Get it checked :)

I was knocked out last year, I went to A&E day later and I WAS REALLY, REALLY told off............. I was signed of work for week and on drugs. I still have wobble head from time to time so please go to A&E

Steff, did you compete today, despite your head injury?

As someone who had a serious head injury in 2008, and still suffers the consequences, I can vouch they are certainly nothing to take lightly!

Definitely get checked out. Us horsey folk are too hard (or stupid) for our own good! My friend got double barrelled at a show today by a big hunter. Took a kick to the wrist and hip, knocked her over and she couldn't get up. Refused an ambulance etc although she is black, blue and swollen. I have tried to get her to a&e but she wont go. I will be personally taking her tomorrow if she hasn't made a significant improvement.

Unfortunately, if you are suffering from concussion, you may well not recognise that you are feeling weird, and may erroneously be convinced that you are fine.

Anyone who's had a blow to the head ideally needs a competent third party to take charge, and to decide whether a trip to A&E is advisable. (I have previously been that confused, concussed person scrambling back on my horse.....;)).

The re is a lot of misunderstanding about concussion ,which is basicly the bruising of the brain and possibly loosing conciousness. It is assumed by the medical fraternity that you loose conciousness and that indicates concussion. NOT SO.Any martial arts expert will bore you at length about how to knock someone out , Basicly it is about a sideways swing to the head. Folk with longer knecks are more prone to it than us kneckless gits . I have taken some almighty swipes and never lost conciousness yet was fully aware that I was Concussed (Loss of vision for five minutes was a dead give away once.).Bash on head , consider your self concussed whether you have lost conciousness or not. Dont just go home and sllep it off alone because there might not be a tomorrow.

Yes I did compete yesterday, on the whole, I feel absolutely fine. The headaches tend to be when at work staring at computer screens for long periods of time. If I'd felt dodgy whilst riding I'd have got straight off and withdrawn. I'm not going to risk pushing myself too far and having another accident!

As someone who is currently recovering from a brain haemorrhage (not from horse riding), please can I urge you to get checked out? I recently suffered a brain haemorrhage and have lost part of my vision, now can't drive, am struggling to return to my former job and suffer with horrendous headaches and fatigue - I wouldn't wish this upon anyone (and I never lost consciousness)!!! Trust me, if you have caused any damage you won't want it to get worse and it is better to find it early rather than late. Please go to A&E now!!!!!

Definitely get checked out!

I fell off a friends horse a few years ago, it came over backwards on top of me... I was knocked out then fitted twice and was foaming at the mouth!... Paramedics and ambulance arrived, I came around, got up and was telling them all I was fine and to leave me alone. Got up, stormed off as I was so annoyed at all the fuss... walked into the barn where my horse was, went to switch on the light, totally missed it! Everyone chasing me around the yard trying to get me to go to hospital - I was so rude to everyone! They blocked my car in the car park as they were so worried I was going to drive off! My best mate finally persuaded me to go.. had to stay in overnight and have multiple scans. They said I was very lucky!

DEFINITELY go and get checked out, even if you don't think you should!

All checked out, xrays and MRI fine thank God! Had a big telling off from the nurse for not going straight away. Sounds silly but i hate going to doctors/hospital, dont like wasting their time!
