Last summer my boy started head shaking, altough was worse when out than in the indoor arena. Around October he seemed to stop. This year, around Easter he started head shaking again, to the point where he was unridable. He's had back check, teeth checked, numerous vet checks and we couldn't find anything so we concluded it was behavoural/ bordom related. I then took him from home to the local yard and he stopped shaking, with the ecception of when he was really bored. Because of finanical reasons I cannot afford to keep him on livery so have brought him and another horse back home.

I've been under the weather at the moment so I haven't been able to do much with him but I checked on him and he seemed to be shaking in the field again. Although I'll have to see what he's like when I'm up to riding again. I'm worried that he has started head shaking again.

Hi, whereabouts are you? i noticed the other day that The Royal Vet College (Herts) are doing a talk on this subject! have a look on their website!

I went to the RVC lecture on headshaking - it was last night.

They covered a huge amount of material and discussed the various triggers for head shaking.

Various diagnostics are available via your vet (including allergy tests), and hopefully your vet will be able to assist you with management techniques such as riding masks etc.

There is a lady on the yard I'm at who's horse has intermittent head shaking, and like your's it stops during the winter, but isn't obvious throughout the whole summer, which is how my hay-fever works - I seem to react to some pollens more than others!!!

She's currently riding in a nose net and has her horse on NAF Shake Relief and seems to think that is helping the situation. For some reason riding seems to exasperate the symptoms.

I've also heard of putting Vaseline in the nose to catch the pollen - might be worth a go???

I have had a similar problem although he shook his head in the school rather than out on hacks and wondered if this was due to boredom although my horses glands do sometimes swell up in summer due to pollen  have you tried lunging or would a martingale help with this as my horse throws his head up along with shaking? :)
