Ive had my new pony just over a month, shes had a full MOT (back, saddle, teeth, feet)

Ive bought her a new bridle and rode her once in her old bit then bought her another single jointed snaffle although this time its a full cheek (Shes only young)

Now today her headshaking was off the scale, never does it when being worked but when being non compliant or standing around it was rather annoying.

When ridden in her old bit she still does it just not as much, the dentist said her teeth were very over due and she was very sharp.

Is she assuming its hurting or is the new bit making it worse?

Or have i got a headshaker?

My pony shakes his head a lot this time of year because of his sweet itch, and I've had a pony before that had a pollen allergy and used to shake her head about whenever she was near the rape. Could be one of these reasons?

It's unlikely she's a headshaker if she doesn't do it when worked - often headshaking only shows when the horse is working.

Are you sure the new bit fits properly? If it's sitting too low it'll catch on her teeth. If she's only doing it when standing maybe she's playing with it if it feels different.

Are you sure it’s not just the midges getting to her? Or maybe a pollen allergy? Bodey head shakes this time of year if he doesn’t have his nose net on because he hates the midges getting up his nose, but he also does it when he is ridden. He never head shakes in the winter when the flies and midges aren't around.

Unfortunatly i dont know if she does it in winter, although i am still in contact with her current owner and she said she never did it very often (apart from the usual with flies etc)

She doesnt do it 'when' being worked but if i am working her and she gets sweaty/hot then as soon as we stop (ie, she starts napping or we're warming down and walking or standing still for any reason) then she does it.

She does get VERY sweaty as shes being fittened up and her past owner never worked her at all so its very new to her but im taking it slowly its just transitions and trotting nothing else.

Hi Equestrian Fairy,

I have just bought a horse which seems to be doing what you've described your horse is doing, i.e. when trotting/cantering no signs of head shaking but then when she's brought back to walk she starts throwing her head up and down. Does your horse display other symptoms, i.e. itching nose on forleg when you stop? My horse does this and also carries her head at an odd angle when in walk.
