Head Shaking

Oh no, poor boy :-( It definitly sounds like sunlight is a trigger, bless him. I hope you have some luck with the nostril vet. I've tried it, and I thought it was good at first, but now cos she's started sneezing so much she just keeps sneezing white stuff out, which I'm assuming is the powder. So I've stopped it for a little while now while I try the Ucerax. I thought she was guna hate having it put up her nose, but she actually seemed to quite like it, maybe it feels quite soothing?? I hope you get on ok with it. Yeah, I know what you mean. I wish they would hurry up and just come up with an answer that would work for all headshakers!!

Hi anything new to report on your horse's headshaking? I've just been through a terrible couple of weeks with mine. He would not leave his stable and would stand with his head in the corner. Mr farrier could not shoe him he was so bad. The vet said he was very distressed and when I got him out of the stable he was so bad he was almost dangerous. I have had him scoped and head xrayed but as I expected it showed nothing and no inflammation of the sinuses. He has been on steroids and has improved quite a bit. He now goes out in the field all day but still head shakes it must wear him out. I assume the steroids are helping but then again he may have improved any way, there is no way of knowing. My vet feels that as the steroids have seemingly had some affect it may be an allergy. I asked about allergy testing and he said that it was controversial, has anyone any information? The steroids cost £1 each and he has 6 a day so just hope my insurance covers it!

Oh no, your poor boy :-( It doesn't sound like you are having much luck!! Did you have any luck with the eye drops or did you try the guardian mask? I don't think I can be of much help with yours because my endoscope showed swelling of the nose, so all the 'remedies' I have tried have been related to her nose. I really hope you manage to find something that helps you.

I was really really getting somewhere with mine, as the vet put her on Ucerax, and she was to have 8 tablets 1-2 hours before I rode. This was working a treat! However, last Friday she suddenly came over with Lymphangitis and didn't eat or drink properly for a week. I think it was the worst week of my life!! She is on the mend now though thank god and I was able to ride her for a very short period today. The vet doesn't think the illness was related to giving the ucerax, but I'm a bit nervous now about giving it. So today, even for that short walk she was headshaking again like crazy!!! It's so unfair, you start getting somewhere, and then something else has to happen!! I'm in the same boat as you 4leggedfriend, praying that insurance will cover it!! 4 vet call outs, and endless supplies of anti-biotics and anti-inflammatories........eeekkkk!!!

The only advice I have got on allergy testing is the info my vet gave me a while ago, saying that even a horse who doesn't show any signs of an allegy is likely to show lots on the results, which makes it very difficult to work out exactly what is causing the head shaking. Plus i think it's very expensive!! If you get it done please can you keep me updated? Good luck!!

Hi Liz

Sorry to hear your news, I know exactly how you feel, it is an emotional roller coaster. For 2 days now I have managed to ride my horse, he is still head shaking but only in fits, in between I can work him which is great, he does not do it so much in canter and only intermittantly in trot. Walk is dreadful and so is getting off him! He is then uncontrollable but stops once I get him back in the stable. At least when he goes out he does not seem so bad but today he was hs more than yesterday in the field so feel down in the dumps again. Like you I am very wary of feeding all these drugs just what are they doing to them? Its not as if the horse can make the decision to take them or not its enirely our responsibility as owners.

I hope your horse recovers from his Lymphangitis and stops the hs once he is back on his drugs
