I have put this on vet. but might get more help here.
My homebred horse is a headshaker which is usually ok with a nose net but at horse trials today he was much worse and did a rubbish dressage .There was quite a lot of rape around and some horrible black flies near the grass .Has anyone tried supplements or medication with success. He had so-kalm last night and this morning but was really tense and couldn't concentrate

my horse doesnt headshake exactly but kinda holds his head down sometimes (only in warmer weather) and seems to be cos of flies. But last year when we were trying to source the problem of his funny head behaviour, my vet suggested we tried a steroid injection (as an antihistamine in case it was due to pollen). Some vets may be reluctant (one side effect of steroid use is laminitis) but you can suggest trying a short acting steroid, such as colvasone (which lasts a few days) or voren 14 (which lasts a fortnight). If your horse has no probs with laminitis after these injections, he should be fine and could then have a longer acting steroid injection that lasts about 6 weeks (cant remember the name of that one!). If his problem is pollen, you may find this really helps and once you know if the steroid is safe in your horse (side effects are not that common) you have a solution with an injection you can give 2-3 times over the warmer months to help him. Hope that helps!

My mare is a headshaker and I usually control it with a nose net. However this year so far she's been awful, a 20min hack is a massive challenge and shes been rubbing her nose along the ground in the field poor thing.

I used beconase spray on her yesturday to ride out and she was better (bit of a challenge squirting it up her nose though) and I am also trying allergeze plus by gold label as that has specifically been tested on horses and rapeseed. I'll shout it from the rooftops if it works!!!

EDT coming Friday so will get teeth checked I know they need doing. It is such a shame he is so talented but can get very tense and calmers don't seem to work. His dressage and sj used to be really good but since he has been eventing the xc is fine but the other is a bit hit and miss

I used to have one that did it so badly he'd run into jumps and flip us both over as he was flingning his head so hard he couldnt see them! We found nets helped to an extent but the big difference was when we put him on Weleda 'Mixed Pollen' herbal pills.
Used to build them up from end of Feb and feed more in the summer, then reduce them until about October. He was AWFUL- so if they helped him must be worth a try on a sane horse!

Salcey the GL product you are trying is the one that contains butterburr. I had very good results with it some years ago on a horse who showed summer COPD type reactions to pollens. Ive also taken the human version and that works too!

Reading that has given me hope for Rock, has he has bad breathing during the summer months because of all the pollen, would it be worth a try?
