Back in September 2006 I bought a section C Welsh ony he is 21 years old and came from a lovely home. He is a real sweet heart and is a genuine kind hearted pony. When I first rode him he was very respondent and was a real dream to ride. At that time I was still a novice rider and he seemed to be very sweet and slowed when asked. I started to have riding lessons on him and one day decided to take him out of the paddock into the big field (big mistake). He was trotting fine and I then asked him to canter, he just took off with me like a steam train I couldn't slow him down. I ended up falling off him as he turned so sharply and I ruptured my knee and fractured my ankle. Since then I am very nervous of him and have had several lessons on other horses to try and get my confidence back and make sure my riding skills were up to scratch as I felt it was my fault that I bolted. I am now an intermediate rider and I have only been riding him on the lunge rope, last year I decided I would take him around the paddock he was perfect he trotted when asked and cantered and slowed when asked. I took him up and down the field several times and then again he took off into a fast canter, then galloped out of control I was thrown at full speed to the ground and I now have cracked ribs. After this I gave up riding him as I believed he didnt like adults on his back. He is now being ridden by my younger sister who is ten years old in a menage three times a week. He was going very well for her but it seems the fitter he gets the faster and stronger he gets and I fear he will bolt with her out of the menage. He doesn't appear to have a sore back and he is currently being ridden in a French Link Full Cheek as this is the bit that came in the bridle when I purchased him. I have had him vetted and he has no back problems and the saddle is the correct fit. I had his teeth rasped last year I cant think of any reason why he does his other than being a smart pony!!!

If he's actually bolting the iyt suggests he's in some discomfort of some kind BUT not always the case. I would possibly try some different bits to be honest. If he's getting his head on the floor and running off I would suggest trying some type of gag bit for example that will help lift his head up. It all depends what he's doing but it sounds like he's getting hold of the bit rather so i would try beg, steal and borrow some other bits and try them out in an enclosed space first. You should find out pretty quickly which bit you get a bit more 'respect' in.

A 21yo welshie is going to know his strength, they are clever little things and there's a lot of power in those little b*ggers so give yourself a chance and get some good brakes installed!!!

Huh????

I would suggest more lessons on your pony. I wouldnt tell the instructor you are an 'intermediate rider' though.

Hi Sorry I meant to say my little sister was riding him on the lunge. She is now riding him in the menage and like I said the fitter he is getting the stronger and faster he is getting. I bought him a kimble wick bit this morning I will try that and see what it does xx
