Head Throwing Advice Please *Long*

I really need some advice on my horses head throwing. He only does this when he is hacking out and only in walk. It starts about ten minutes into our ride. He throws his head up snatches the reins then stops. He then napps. He isn't afraid, and he does'nt want to be with his friends becase they can come past and he is just happy to let them carry on. Ive tried all the usual things with the napping, but in the end if you get off walk him two steps and get back on he is happy to carry on. He does'nt always napp. The napping it'nt my main concern its the head throwing. He dos'nt do it when he's ridden in the arena,( he is only ridden in there for 15 mins) or when he is LL in the arena when he has the pessoa on or the pessoa off. He does'nt do it when you LL our around the farm. I don't think he likes a contact on his mouth and when i bought him he had always been ridden on the buckle end. Hes had his back and teeth checked twice, and also his saddle checked and all way ok. Hes ridden in a hapy moth . He's 5 and im thinking that hes just throwing his toys out of the pram and having a paddy. Do I just ignore it and ride through it and hope in time he grows out of it ?

Hi, I had this problem start a couple of weeks ago, ive been chatting to ponydentist on here who gave me a number for a proper equine dentist as ive always had a vet do my horses teeth, anyway gregg wood came out to me today and my horses teeth where so sharp and he had a wolf tooth that no vet had told me about before, he wouldn't let him finish so ive got to get the vet out to sedate him and then gregg is going to take out his wolf tooth as well.
So if it's a vet thats always checked yout horses teeth then id definately get a proper equine dentist out to look at him, if you have then I cant think of anything else that you havn't already mentioned.
 
Hi Moomin, Thanks, The vets checked his teeth and the dentist has done them too. Im just at a loss of what to do.

Should of double checked my spelling thou .
 
Could you try a bitless bridle to see if it really is the bit he dislikes?
I know with my boy it took about 10 bits before he settled in one, and in the end he liked a jointed pelham with a peanut in the middle and copper mouthed., and he hated any snaffles I used!
 
Hi, my horse does this too and it drives me mad. He too doesnt do it in the school and only does it on the way home when hacking. I put it down to excitement. He doesnt nap, just tosses his head.
 
The mare I sold earlier this year was exactly the same as loubys ie didn't do it the school, or on the way out on a hack but would do it on the way home. She didn't ever nap either. Her teeth were fine and done every 6 months by a v good horse dentist.

I have to say I used to give her a very sharp kick in the ribs every time she did it and it stopped her doing it when I was riding her, but she still did it when my friends rode her.

Not saying I did the right thing or that it would work for yours but it stopped her!
 
Thanks for all your replies, I wish I could put it down to excitment, but this pony has only one speed. It might be worth me trying some different bits thou.
 
it could be a muscle spasm, I had a horse years ago that use to do that, I found that if I let him stretch his neck for a little while, he was fine, I was also told it could be because his back muscles were weak as I didn't ride every day.
