I’ve recently bought a horse who especially when hacking throws her head up and down, she seems to chomp on the bit a lot aswell, her teeth have been checked and new saddle, she’s currently ridden in a D-Ring Snaffle with Copper Rollers, any advice very much appreciated

Hmm, it could be a lot if things but since you say it mainly happens out hacking in addition to bit chomping, I wonder is it frustration/stress/anxiety. My horse throws his head up and down when frustrated, stressed or anxious. Perhaps riding away from home causes her to be more excited or nervous and that brings on the head movement.

How did she behave for her previous owner? And for you when you tried her the first time?

Was she ridden in the type of bit you are using now?

It's a sign she is in discomfort that's for sure. Could she be simply tired? Does it come on after a while, or as soon as you set off?

If she doesn't do it in the school, could you try walking for a similar amount of time, in a similar manner, to see if it is truly situational, or if it is how you ride/ duration when hacking?

I have had some baby horses do this when they simply get tired and achey.

My mare is the same our hacking
I done teeth, bit, saddle, back all with no difference
I found she didn’t do it when hacking in company so could be stress
Just push her forward and they tend to stop after they settle into it
