At the moment we have no power on the yard, now 9 times out of 10 one of us will always make it back in the afternoon before it gets dark to do evening stables, however a) this isn't always possible, and b) it means the horses are left for longer so I am now looking into head torches! Ideally I'd like a water proof or water resistant one (for obvious reasons) and I want a wind up one as I am useless with batteries! So can anyone recommend me a good one?

OH half bought me one of these which was a godsend last year. Managed to muck out and turnout in the dark before work and get them all in after work in the dark. They are battery powered but onbe lot of batteries lasted me the whole of last winter.

They do lots of others too which might be worth a look. They've got a 'black friday' deals week on Amazon so you'll probably find one on there for a good price.

Forgot to mention, the retractable cord means that although you can wear it as a head torch it fits in your pocket

I have tried loads of cheap head torches but the absolute best one I have found is the Petzle tikka II - light, small (fits over a hat) takes 3 AAA but have only just replaced the first ones after a year of use, and then it had only just started to fade. Funnily OH has just phoned me from work to say he is getting another 2 on his work account (he keeps stealing mine), do we need another spare!

Another vote...my OH has one which is needed for mucking out Beau`s atble as he`s the only one with no lights!
Use it for walking the dogs too

We had a couple of cheap ones which were about £8 and only lit up a small area. This weekend we got some from Go Outdoors and they were £31 and absolutely brilliant! We poo pick every night when we get the boys in and the new torches are making it a doddle! Light up the paddocks a treat!

Brilliant and cheap. I am a right clutz and break everything - this is lasting really well and is super bright!

These are the ones the majority of the mountaineering club (myself included) at uni use. Brilliant, multiple brightness settings and also have a red light on the back so if your super cool like me and also use it for cycling/hacking people can see you from both directions. They're also really robust (i have thrown/dropped and generally abused mine and it's still going strong :D )
