I like the ones that can pull the rope out of the head piece to get it off the horse if necessary. We only use headcollars for travelling, otherwise, halters all the time, they can be swapped between horses and are infinitely adjustable. We have one youngster who was sold as difficult to catch, we can only assume that she objected to having headcollars rattling around her head, as she has never been a problem for us to catch in a nice quiet halter.
And I agree with Dry Rot about expensive NH halters!
 
Although the halters my own horses wear all the time are leather, I have to add I do also have tons of rope halters dotted around the farm and hanging on all hitching rails. They are invaluable for going around all the fields when the farrier comes or to catch one of them up for whatever. Not all the horses who live on my farm wear halters/headcollars all the time so that's where rope halters come into their own. I also do not buy the expensive NH type ones, just the generic ones that cost around $5 each.
 
I like quality English leather with buckles on both sides of the headpiece and under or on the noseband combined with chunky traditional cotton leadropes with dog lead type clips. A decent quality well fitting leather head collar can last a horses life time.
 
I like the Shires one where the noseband unbuckles on top. When tied up you can undo noseband put bridle on and do it up back over the bridle easily. Lead-ropes prefer cotton with a big clip but recently been getting synthetic types as seem to last longer when used as everyday and left out in rain. For shows and travelling I use a leather headcollar and cotton rope.

I have to agree. I couldn't cope with having mine left outside in all weathers. In fact if they do get wet at all, they are brought in to sit by the fire and dry out.

I don't understand the difference between 'groundwork' and taking your horse from A to B and expecting it to behave, so don't understand why some horses wear halters for groundwork and headcollars the rest of the time.
 
I like the KM Elite head collars. Lovely and padded, extra padding across the poll and they're thick and strong. The lead ropes to match are nice too!

Mine occasionally has a tendency to pull back, although touch wood she hasn't done it in around 3 years, but were she to do it again, I believe the thicker the headpiece, the less damage she'll do to herself in the process.
 
i like bog standard head collars for every day, has to have a throat lash clip - currently have the horse wear newmarkety one in blue, with a cotton lead rope and trigger clip. Also have a leather head collar for travelling.

Cannot bare those nylon/shiney lead ropes that tend to come with those luminous head collars with the black padding on nose and poll - awful to tie up with ad absolutely zero grip if anything tries to P off!

also dislike those really stiff cotton lead ropes that usually have a massive knot in the end! grrr!
