Cos I don't want to hijack CC's thread, which head collar do you favour and why?

I have haltis and canny collars: they're not bad and I can at least not face plant when lead walking.

I'm interested in all the other types, so please tell me which one you used/use and how effective they are. Thanks.

Hijack away :p
The Gentle Leader is the first and only one I have used.
He did dick about a bit when it was first connected to the lead, but, er, tough, he can't be dragging my mother about when she has stitches in her shoulder.
Working well so far.

Also worth saying, let the dog wear it in the house and treat the dog for not reacting to it, rather than just whacking it on and going out for a walk!

I muzzled Zak tonight and he just sat on my knee watching telly.

He's had the halti and canny collar on, hates both but tough. What is different about the gentle leader?

yup, i have at least 6 gentle leaders lying about the place:cool: they lead from under the nose for a start, like a horse headcollar, so dont have the same 'throttle' effect on the neck.

I have a Gentle Leader. I got that one because people had told me about Haltis rubbing.... I compared the 2 in the shop and tbh of "action" of them looked identical, it's just the halti had a few extra bits of strapping..... I was told by someone the other day that they have brought out a new halti with padding in it, so maybe this would sort the rubbing issue?

I like my GL. It's done the trick. No complaints!

I have a canny collar and it works well but its fiddley when you let your dog off lead, I tend to use a choke if I want more control.

CT why have you got a muzzle on Zak has he hurt himself.?

I have used a Gencon on Evie, I like the fact that it controls from behind the ear like a collar rather than from the muzzle like some of the headcollars. I'm not comfortable with turning the head all the time which is how some of the headcollars work. fine on a horse when it happens only occasionally but not so much on a dog which may be being corrected all the time (just my opinion obviously). Like DG I mainly use a flat linked check chain though.

I'm afraid that there was an incident with a bearded collie whose owner thought it was fine to allow her dog to jump on Zak (who was still on the lead) then she refused to recall it another day then the third time, our lot were in the car and the dog attacked the car! It's left scratches but worse, it's undone all the ruddy training with Zak so we're starting from scratch. :( I'm so upset. Stupid stupid woman. Sadly, she's the OH of our neighbour's son. The neighbour looks after our three two or three days a month and adores them.

Anyhow, Zak and Bear both ran off last week, Zak was gone for 2 hours, Bear for 4. Whilst Zak was away, he apparently rolled another dog. He doesn't appear to want to bite, just dominate and get in there first to defend himself. Purely because I'd go crazy at another dog seeming to attack mine, I've bought a muzzle. Not used it yet, hoping training will resolve this again, so just in case. we've changed where and timings of walks so as to avoid this dog/owner.

I have a gentle leader purley for the fact that they are fixed- as in do not loosen when dog stops pulling, as with the halti the moment it was loose up came the paw and off came the halti!

Yes, Zak is quite the expert at that and super quick. The OH walks them on normal collars but I worry that they'll hurt their necks so I want something that won't have me face planting ((happened a few times with Zak :() and that won't impact on their faces. The halti seemed harsh and Bear was getting a line on his nose.

Thats awful some owners just dont have a clue.

You must have been worried sick when 2 went missing, did they escape from the garden or on a walk?

My last 2 Lancashire Heelers were buggers for killing rabbits and eating them and wouldnt come out of a hedge until they had. I just used to leave them to it and they would come home very portly. This was all on our own land, no roads and just a couple of fields away from home and always back within 30 minutes.

How annoying for you CT, I remember a dog jumping at our car once barking at our dogs, from being perfect travellers they became nightmares for a while, raving at dogs walking past etc. Luckily we were going to a lot of shows so the fairly quickly got used to dogs around the car again, but it is so frustrating when other dogs actions upset your training.
You must have been frantic when they went off particularly when Zak came back and Bear was still missing. Frightening to think what could have happened.:(

They were on a walk when they disappeared. The OH eventually waited at the car with big dog (Captain Sensible!). There was no point in him trawling 160 acres on one side of the lane and probably 100 on the other. I worry that someone will steal them!

We had cured the lack of focus through the use of a ball launcher in a fabulous field but after 9 years of it being fallow, the farmer has sown a crop and said he's sick of people going on it. It's access land on Ordnance Survey but I don't want to annoy him.

This bearded collie has only recently been walked where we walk, never seen it except next door til recently. They had it running free immediately after an operation, with stitches in. It's a pain having to check for her car and going elsewhere if we see it. Luckily, we know some of the old dears that walk their very calm (old, so fat they can hardly walk :() dogs so Zak can have stooge dogs that won't react to his squeaking/bouncing.
