My horse has just started headshaking again (cleared up over winter as seems to be seasonal). I ride him in a nose-net which completely solves the problem when ridden but would like to get try something to help him when he is in the field as he looks like he is being bothered in there too.

I have tried fly masks which strangely don't seem to help much (even though the nose net does when ridden) but wondered what would be the best supplement/alternative remedy to try as there seem to be quite a few out there??? Any suggestions/remedies very welcome!

I used to give my headshaker antihistamines and that helped. One a day, and i bought the cheap ones from the supermarket, tesco sell 7 for 50(ish)p

ETA could you try turning out with the nosenet attached to a headcollar? Perhaps the very fine mesh works better than the coarser material of the fly masks

I have the same problem with my girl... and tbh she does do it in the field sometime, but does settle down with her head stuck in another horses tail. In my opinion she just has to learn to deal with the flies when she's in the field, she's only bothering herself, maybe that sounds harsh but if she wasn't so sensitive she wouldn't have the problem

Maybe its not her fault! A bit like telling someone with asthma they cant have their inhaler to help and they shouldnt be so sensitive! Maybe the flies are causing her distress, not that shes distressing herself? I dont understand how helping her feel more comfortable is that difficult, sorry!

OP- if the headshaking appears to be as a result of pollen then you could try herbs rich in anti oxidants, such as nettle. Buckwheat has antihistamine content and meadowsweet is an anti-inflammatory herb

What a very strange attitude to have towards your horses headshaking

mybe if you weren't so insensitive.........

OP, nothing worked on my headshaker, the nose net improves things greatly and i managed her with diet and nose nets/fly mask with a nose peice.
Perhaps putting her nose net that she is ridden in onto your headcoller would be the answer

I have tried every supplement under the sun for my poor guy. Nose net helps for ridden so he now wears one in the field too (which he hates by the way_ but it helps him so ???), at this time of the year. The nose net part on the equilibrium fly mask seems to work for my guy, but you have to make sure that it is fitted to hang low enough. I don't make him wear that unless there are flies out too.

I've started using the NAF Shaker Guard with success. Our boy hates the nosenet - seems to make him worse - so decided to go with a supplement this year and its worked well so far. He seems to be allergic to tree pollen and we believe is photosensitive as would freak out at sunlight through trees??? I only feed a half dose a day and it has stopped any symptoms appearing this year, normally by now horse cant be hacked but he has hunted and hacked out regularily.

Thanks all for your suggestions! loving the natural remedies suggested so may try those first and then try out some of the supplements if they natural ones don't seem to help!!
