headshaking - whack head with crop?

That is a terrible thing to suggest - I rarely get worked up about stuff I see on here, but that made me see red.
 
That is sound advice... As long as you want a head shy, paranoid horse , that may actually be head shaking for all sorts of reasons.

Grr the advice that some people are getting ATM makes me see red

Headshaking can be caused by a multitude of medical reasons - one of them being Trigeminal Neuralgia which is a very painful condition for the horse - known as "the suicide disease" in humans. I cannot believe that anyone has told you to do this! I suggest you pick up the whip this person suggested you should use to hit the horse stick it up said person's ar$e.

I would be informing the BHS as well - I'm pretty sure they don't advocate whacking a horse round it's head, for any reason.

my pony did the same thing and people told me that i should punish him by wacking him and tugging on one reign which i thought was mean.
someone suggested that he might suffer from heyfever and the headshaking was due to an itchy nose! we brought him a net for his nose that ataches to his noseband. it worked really well and he hasnt shaken his head for 4 years!! he suffers from it all year round so he has to wear the net all the time but it doesnt bother him. this might be whats bothering your horse. or maybe its his teeth or bit. check all these first....thats definitely what id do...rather then wack him round the head!!!

Im so sorry if i have upset anyonje with this post - i just needed ot share.
My ex instructor is bhs trained and works in bhs welfare - im going ot text her now to tell her
I just wasnt sure if i was over reacting - again ty all - im ashamed ot admot i was startign to think if she was right

His teeth are done every 6 months, his back is fine - hes ridden treeless with no noseband.
Ive tried full riding nosenet, piriton, standing martingale - no difference

I think he does it when hes excited - he does it when forst goign out, when he recognises his route home and also when he gets a rub when hes beign good

Hes 8 - a happy hacker and tbh it worries other people more than me - i can handle it with a sharp "ah aha ah" and raising his reins a bit, hes not in pain - hes not evil and it really doesnt bother me!
Its just what he does and as i said i can stop it when needed ie on roads xxx

ty so much - as ive said before ive tried allsorts with my instructor - hes in a french link snaffle bit - hes really not uncomfortable - i do think its excitement x
 
I'd get him checked out by a vet to try to pin-point the problem....

As for the advice, are people suprised? There are many numpties on this earth....we should be used to it by now!

hiya, just remembered something else. prety sure this is defo not it but i did hear somewhere once that horses can be prone to nerve spasms (i think in there necks or backs or something) that can cause them to shake there heads?? dont really know tht much bout it. as i said....probably isnt!!!

Get an equine dentist to do teeth not a vet... Same as a farrier is a specialist in what they do so is an EDT, this might help the situation.

Agree hit the "advisor" not the horse over the head!!!
 
Does he shake it up and down rather than side to side? My mare who I am currently reschooling does this when she realises her other evasion techniques aren't working she also does it on hacks when she is not either in front or second in line. My instructor tells me it's a baby thing like a bit of a tantrum it's definitely not physical as she has had all checks and these are the only 2 times she does it!
 
Totally agree. Whats happening when people are advised to hit horses when they dont know why they are doing whatever it is they are to be punished for. Still seething from an incident I saw a few weeks ago when a horse was thwaked hard across the side of the head for neighing!!!!!! Several times. It was horfiffic. People just stood and looked on.!!!!!! I did complain to secretary of show. We will not support that show again.
