Hi,

Sorry this is a bit of a general question, but how do you stop headshaking? My sister's pony does this whilst being ridden, and wears a net over her nose. It seems like shes always done this-her last owners always rode her with a net on too. Its worse in the summer due to flies etc. I've never really encountered this problem too much before so some advice would be brilliant.

Also-do you think I am being a bit anal about strongly recommending my sister gets a physio out to see the pony? I'm not sure the headshaking could be solved by this, but I have already discovered that she is stiffer on the right rein. She's from Ireland and I doubt she has ever had her back checked, and I know the physio worked wonders with my own horse a few years ago.

Thanks

Teeth are due soon I think-tack has not been checked yet I'm ashamed to say. If it were my pony I would be doing things a bit differently! She is bound to change shape soon though as is slightly overweight at the moment, so will definitely be due for a visit from the saddlers. Do you think they could all be linked to the headshaking?

There are many causes of headshaking including allergies, teeth, muscular tightness, behavioual issues, nerve problems, tack etc. So I would definately recomend you call out your vet in the first instance for a full health check and clinical exam. You will have to have her seen by a vet before a physio can treat her anyway.

my pony was a headshaker when i got him almost hit me in the face he was that bad...

we had his teeth and back checked ..new bridle and bit

and nose net (think it makes him worse)

but after all that ....i think its more his nerves/excitment
as it is not all the time and he is young..

have teeth done check tack professinally get vet to do full check get ostepath out then you will know if there is any under lying problems!
