Does anyone use these for schooling in the dark? My new yard doesn't have floodlights in their arena, so I am looking into alternatives, such as headtorches and halogen lanterns.

No, I don't find anything I have come across to be bright enough to dispell the idea that there are monsters out there. OH mare also has a complete and total s**t fit at a torch for some reason so we don't even go there! Slow work at helping her feel ok with torches is no where near the level where I would entertain riding her with one! In the past when oh was keeping her fit for comps and was working late he would park his car with the headlights on overlooking the school. Not perfect but good enough for a short session to try and maintain fitness.

Our outdoor school doesn't have lights and I find I can do slow(ish) work in there in the dark. Horses have much better night vision than us, so I think if you're careful and you give them time to adjust when you go in there, they will be able to see where the barrier fence is. Just don't go too fast :)

Well, I've done some research this morning and found a couple of not too expensive things that might work as freestanding arena lights...

I'm wondering about getting a couple of these or maybe one this or even this

The rolson ones are quite good, used them for a refurb on a house.:)
The headtorches just dont give enough light off them? They are ok for doing stuff around yard or checking horses in fields but wouldnt ride in it:)
