Doing my first affiliated dressage next weekend. doing two elementary tests and am planning on it being the first of many dressage comps. so my big question is headwear for me!! i have showjumped for years and have one of those mad looking gpa speed air hats but don't really want to wear that doing dressage? are they even allowed? i'm thinking of buying a beagler as it would jus be for competition wear anyway? any recommendations? is that the right way to go??

You can wear whatever you want as there are no restrictions (except no top hat till higher level). You generally see people just wearing normal velvet hats (charles owen etc) rather than beaglers. I guess thats because of the safety factor I suppose. I wear a plain black velvet one.

Some venues insist on BS hats, Solihull RC being one it just depends but I'd get one of those first then treat yourself to a beagler later on if you're still keen

Actually you can wear a dressage top hat from Novice level or a bowler, but they are rarely seen these days . Infact anything you think looks smart goes. Most wear Beaglers. At the lower levels.
The safety issue is obviously something you have to decide.

At Solihull does that mean that Beaglers cannot be worth then at the Nationals??

i was actually thinking that, however i wore a beagler at the nationals last year and it was fine, as did loads of other people, and i cant see top riders not wearing beaglers.

Thats ok then as my "everyday" one is rather grubby!! Although I do feel a little apprehensive about wearing my beagler.... think I may do the early warm up with my "grubby" one just in case he wants to rear a few times first though!

I wud wear a navy beagler or else a nice charles owen with flesh coloured leather straps! R u looking forward to it? How come u decided to do dressage? What do all ur SJ buddies think?!

Sherwood.. I dont really know why I decided to do dressage!!! I suppose it was because I realised how hard it was and wanted to know more.. (I use to think it was easy and boring!) but the more I spent training on the flat I started to get hooked!! Then I saw the paces and movements of a wonderful warmblood !!! (not to say other breeds dont but they caught me eye first!) But my boy has a leap in him though and as soon as I can afford a GP saddle I am going to jump him (jumped once in a dressage saddle and it was very painful!) As far as my SJ buddies... I had non!!HA!! My Buddies do all disciplines but I have moved yards now so most of us do dressage here although we are going to do some jumping clinics soon!

Martlon, Dollanstown and Killosery don't give a stuff if you wear a beagler just incase you were worried!
