I have a thoroughbred who is the type to drop weight easily so wears rugs until summer. She's fit healthy and happy except she has some sores on her withers... they clearly need no rugs on but she can't be without rugs yet as she is a cold horse and will lose weight. Any ideas? Vet gave some steroid cream to help the healing process.

As Pinkvboots said. A friend of mine had all her horses rugs altered to have a hole cut out where the withers are. A local rug repair lady did them for her. Her horse suffered on and off with wither sores.

Yes MummyEms I had an old sheepskin coat and I cut a big piece off and hand sewed it with a darning needle and strong thread. I covered the whole wither area and sides with the sheepskin and also a good margin. It worked so well. This was on my chestnut tb with a shark fin wither. He has super sensitive skin and rubbed so easily. I have to say that after a couple of years of using my bibs (I made 2, one on and one off) I didn't use them anymore. His skin toughened up somehow. I keep them just in case. The old boy will be 23 this year :).

I just wanted to add I am no seamstress, if I can sew it anyone can.
