I would just like to know if has experienced or believe that horses have actually healed them, mentally, physically, through alchohol or drug issues or anything else!!.. I am looking into training myself for Equine Assisted psychotherapy and am gathering peoples thoughts, experiences.

I knew one lady who through horses helped her to overcome agoraphobia.

You do not have to say too much if you do not want to just a yes or no!!

Thanks. x

Yes, our first two helped me through the breakdown following my marriage collapsing, I went from not having anything to get up for to having to get up to see to these two little wild scraps and then WANTING to get up to see to the two gorgeous affectionate ponies that I had acquired.

I think that they def help as it doesn't matter how down you feel, you have a responsibility to look after your horse. They then are pleased to see you which is an enormous lift when you are having a rubbish time. Even without riding, you can make progress with manners on the ground etc and it gives you such a boost noticing the changes for the good that you have brought about. I got my beautiful mare shortly after my husband passed away. Having responsibility for her and slowly building a bond with her has helped incredibly. She is my wonderful girl!

Sure they can - just by owning a horse you can quit drugs, alcohol, gambling and shopping addiction. Mostly because you cannot afford them anymore :D

On a more serious note I think having a horse is very grounding and the routine they give you (like it or loathe it), means that you have purpose to your life, which can help with mental wellness.

thankyou for your responses. Very warming to know others find horses can be healers and help us through tough times. Do you think that looking after or being around horses can help people though, those who cannot afford a horse or cannot ride?

I think it certainly can. Just being allowed private quiet time with an animal brings a peacefulness which is good for the soul.
