August 8th, found a yearling had managed to hook himself on a staple gate latch.

Stitching took over three hours and lasted three or four days before they all broke down.
The difficulty was knowing what to put on such a large wound.
Manuka Honey (30+) seemed the route to go but, it was A) very messy. B) attracted flies and wasps, C) melted off the injury D) had bedding attached to it if the yearling lay down.
I the went the Neem Oil route. This worked very well, it kept the flies away, stopped any proud flesh and stopped the oozing from sticking as much to his belly.

I then was told of Resolve Wound Salve from a couple of people in the USA. I sent for some and applied it after the first couple of weeks.

Prognosis was good that the wound would heal and vet said that after Christmas we would look at skin grafting of necessary. He thought there would be several sessions of removing proud flesh.

Here are a series of pictures. Thanks to the Resolve there is going to only be a minimal scar, there is no lump from the flap and as the wound heals so the hair is growing too.

What has been astounding is the speed that this has healed. It is not an astringent and so the animal does not get fed up with it being applied. It is not messy and can be bandaged or not.
I have been around horses a long time and seen many nasty injuries and know they will heal but will usually take a long long time.
The vet was so surprised when he saw how it had healed and kept going back to look again.
I made a mistake in not measuring where I took the pictures from as the last look a fair size but is less than 2" now.

Good grief! I've never seen anything heal like that.

What happened to the snapped ribs - were they taken out?

We were expecting some severe scarring but there won't be anything much at all.
The ribs were removed. They were put to one side and the dog ate them!

What a horrible injury!!

How on earth did he managed that!?

Cannot believe how well it has healed!

They had the run of two fields, the gate was tied open. I can only assume that they galloped through the gate and he was knocked against the catch. The angle of the latch in the gate (it was flattened against the post) showed that he hit it from the smooth side not the side that holds the latch in place. The farrier hit the leach with his heaviest hammer on the anvil and couldn't move it.
I had a strong rugby playing lad remove the latch which took many whacks with a sledge hammer and metal wedges yet the yearling had pulled one side of it out of the post.

Seen those before, but I'm still  at the pics.

Can't believe your dog ate thè ribs either, has he been eyeing up the horse since for more?! :D

Oh my good god!! What an injury!!! How the hell did you hold it together when you saw that??!! Poor lad!!

Blut WOW!! what an amazing rate of healing!! Amazing how wonderfully young bodies can heal... with a helping hand of course ;)

Back in the middle of August my friends young horse sliced his shoulder open, the wound was as big as the palms of two hands. He again did it on a gate hinge.

My friend does not like me posting the pictures so at her request I will not do it.

The vet was there within half an hour and stitched it up beautifully but within a week the stitches had broken down leaving a big hole. We used Flamizine cream. and spayed it with Allusray (Silver Spray)We ordered some Injury 200cc from Ainsworths and he had 1 tablet three times a day.

It seemed each day there was some improvement.

The young lad is going to be an Endurance horse and did his first ride in October, 2 months after doing the injury.

It took about six week for the wound to heal and today you would not know he had done anything. He moves very well with a lovely long trot stride and no problem with the shoulder.

It is amazing how quickly and how well these kind of wounds can heal.

Wow. That is some wound  and some pretty funky healing he's done too. Unbelievable. Was he on antibiotics throughout or did you just do your best to keep it clean?

I was walking the dogs when I went to check the horses, realised it was a bad injury but had no halter so took the dogs back, called the vet, then got him in. I never fall to pieces, it doesn't do any good! In fact, it does the opposite - you panic and fuss and the animal gets upset so cool and calm, organise and deal with is the way to go.

It's amazing how it has healed - I was looking at it on another site in US - the people who make the ointment.

Am thinking of getting some here in NZ

I would never be without Resole Wound. I stupidly cut the back of my left thumb with a saw - it was down to the bone and about 3" long. Washed it off, used the Resolve bandaged and it was healed within a week.

As for antibiotics he was only on two courses. It was difficult to keep the wound clean because he would lay on both sides so, despite having a cotton sheet on it was impossible to keep it clean. Just washed it off twice a day and used the Neem Oil to start then with the Resolve Wound the oozing slowed and quickly stopped and it forms a sort of seal over the area so less was sticking.

Having seen many serious injuries I know that after a while a horse can get fed up with treatment and start to object. As the Resolve Wound does not sting this colt only had two days of being ansty and that was because I was having to pick the oozed crud off his belly. Never has he bothered about the wound being painted.
He is in a loose barn 30' x 30' with a mare when he sees me go in with the bucket to wash the area and the Resolve he goes and stands against the gate and waits for me to wash and dress it. No halter or anyone holding him he just is in the routine.

It's amazing what some horses will tolerate.

I've just had my youngster with a bad hock onjury - a mere scratch compared to yours.

I made up saline in a sterilised 4litre garden pump spray.

Make up the solution, Pump up the pressure and spray away - you can then keep out of kicking distance and clean the wound without risk of further contamination.
