My darling retired yard cat Moley who came home with me a year ago after the yard closed down is poorly. I took him to the vet today as he stopped eating but nothing obvious on physical exam. Blood results back tomorrow but he’s looking worse this evening. He’s such a character and I’ve known him for 14 of his 16yrs. I’m so upset 😢

He’s staying in vets this afternoon for fluids and he’s now got a temperature so being given antibiotics. Not had test results back yet. I ‘slept’ downstairs on the sofa last night to be with him so feel rather drained.

I’m not convinced the vet properly examined him yesterday. It was chaos as they had an emergency admission and only one vet working. So we were about an hour late going in.

She said she’d do the blood draw first then examine him and I wasn’t with her when she examined him which I thought I would be and as it was so busy I didn’t question it. It it seems odd he had none of the symptoms he now has yesterday when he was obviously unwell. Haven’t got blood results yet.

Our cat was ill last year and presented much the same. Not eating, just seemed lethargic and feeble. Vet found nothing. Bloods showed infection but we didn’t know what.
A few days later another vet found a bite on his leg that had got infected.
So don’t panic, it’s hopefully something fairly simple
🤞🤞

Healing vibes for Moley…I hope you get blood result answers soon.
If he’s still doing a bit of hunting at his mature age, he might have had a mouse that didn’t agree with him, a rat bite him, or maybe even winded himself prancing around trying to get a bird, as the birds are all flitting about right now.
All of my cats at various ages have had the above happen that caused them to present as really quite unwell, but soon returned to health. Maybe it’s something similar for Moley. Hugs for you, it’s often worse not knowing.

Blood tests showed a bacterial infection but all other parameters normal so kidney function ok and thyroid levels good. So anti inflammatory was given as well as the long-lasting antibiotic and he’s home. He has had some water but refused anything to eat. He’s still not well. Sometimes they feel a lot better soon after having an anti-inflammatory but disappointingly he’s had no significant improvement. Hope he’ll start feeling better by tomorrow 🤞.

I’ve got Mirtazapine appetite stimulant which I’ll try tomorrow if he’s still not eating.

Still not great but he is drinking and using his litter tray. I gave him the Mirtazapine for his appetite and he did come and look for food but wouldn’t eat it. I don’t think he can smell it as he is congested. Although it said to give the Metacam with food reading the instructions it can be given without food it’s just better not to but I think he needs something to help him feel better and lower his temperature.

He appears to be feeling a bit better. He’s been more active and seems to want the comfort of sitting with me rather than under the chair. He seems to want to eat he tried a bit of marmite and butter on toast and a bit of my sausage McMuffin but then wouldn’t eat anything.

I cooked a sausage and blended it to a paste then tried it with some chicken gravy but he wouldn’t touch it. Tried roast salmon, tinned tuna and his usual food but he won’t eat it warm or cold. I’d give him filet steak if I thought he would eat it.

Hoping maybe tomorrow he’ll be less congested and will start eating.

Good to hear there’s improvement with his behaviour and movements, that’s a good sign of progress, despite him not eating much yet.
My cats have seemed to go off food more drastically than my dogs when they’re ill. One girl of mine wouldn’t eat or drink for 3 days straight. Then day 4 started eating. Like there’s a conditioned instinct to not eat when they feel off at all, even minor. Whereas when my dogs didn’t eat I knew there was absolutely something seriously wrong, because they’d always try to eat something when feeling slightly off, unlike my cats.
Hopefully the gourmet cat food mixes you’ve made for him soon tempt him as he increasingly feels well enough 🤞

Belated get well vibes for Moley. I used to syringe Metacam directly into my old cat's mouth when he was ill. I don't suppose you've tried the licky yoghurt things, that are meaty flavoured? I used those to entice Willy when he wouldn't eat.

I also had a cat that reacted to the antibiotic injection. That made him more ill than he already was! So, he may be not eating due to that. Hope he's better, soon. xx

I hope Moley is on the up! When I've had really poorly cats I've used the 'mousse' type foods and sometimes found they would eat it off my finger but not off a bowl, plate etc. so I think that is worth a go too, just as an idea.

Thanks for all the well wishes. He has started to eat. He had one pouch yesterday and he’s eaten one today. He’s quite snotty but I think it’s loosening.

He’s a very fussy cat even when he’s not ill and won’t touch Lick-e-lix or any other variation even on a good day. He won’t eat cream cheese, primula cheese, pate, salmon spread, chicken spread, expensive trout pate etc. etc. he’s a pita but I love him 😍 🤣.

He's heard about UPFs and wants nothing to do with them :D V glad to hear he's taking in sustenance
