This weekend my boyfriends sister's horse jumped out of his field and ripped his chest/ shoulder open on the barb wire in the next field. He has been such a star for all his treatment and it seems like he knows that we are only trying to help. He is now starting the long long road to recovery but with some of your famous healing vibes I hope he will heal as quick as possible . I would love some positive stories of horses that have had simular injuries and made a full recovery.

A good friend of mine's horse did this, I will trawl for their story.

Good news is, he healed up just fine :)

Ooh, have you not had the vet to look at it :confused:?

It's just that it doesn't look cleaned/stitched in the today picture.
Good luck with his recovery though!!
 
Oh dear what a shame. Looks nasty but horses do seem to heal well. Have you thought of equine cold water spa therapy for him? A few years ago a friend's horse jumped out of a field and ended up on a wooden stake. Looked horrendous but with spa therapy and lots of patience and TLC he made a full recovery.

Yeah the vet has been up and he is on lots of medication. It needs to be washed out and iodined every day . They haven't stiched it up as they don't want to close infection in the wound . She said it will look worse before it gets better. He has torn his pectoral muscle too . Thanks for the vibes x
 
Looks nasty, but I bet it'll heal really well. There was a pic on here a while back of a horrid abscess on a horse's chest caused by an injection, and that looked loads worse than this, but healed surprisingly well.
 
I didn't take any photos of the injury before it was stapled together (I was too worried to think of it) but my yearling filly went through a barbed wire fence. The wire didn't snap and the fence posts actually broke at ground level. 90% of the field was fenced with hedge or post and rail and the wire section did have a wooden top rail, which she snapped.

^ these were taken a few days after the injury. The yellow is fly cream. She had to be box-rested to stop her from popping the staples out. It was very hard, but I would go before breakfast and give her some sedalin, return after breakfast and graze her in-hand. This woud be repeated in the evening. She had a huge heamotoma between her front legs for a little while too.

^ these were taken a couple of weeks later after she was turned out again. The vet sedated her for the initial turn out and she was so pleased to have some grass that she was very well behaved when the sedation wore off. The small section of wire had been replaced with post and rail by the land's owner. Again, the yellow is fly cream, you can see how she was cut right along her side.

^last summer, all healed. You could just see where the worst cuts were if you looked really, really closely.

Faracat that looks nasty ! I'm hoping he will recover just as good as your filly. The vet is sure he will make a full recovery but it looks awful at the moment . They are going up twice a day to give him his meds. He is still as lovely as ever even though he is in lots of pain. I really appreciate all the healing vibes .
 
I had one years ago who went through wire, looked horrible at the time but healed up to the point where you only saw it if you looked closely. The chest is a really good area for healing, the skin is nice and loose and not put under too much strain. Hope he heals well :)

Exactly! I'm sure there'll be little to see in a few months, and he may well be back in work within weeks
 
My last horse jumped a gate and tore his stifle. It looked really nasty and bled and ran like crazy, but he healed up 100%. Just keep cleaning at it with hibiscrub, and use plenty of betadine or similar. I always put the cream above the wound as well, as it tends to melt and run into it :) The vet probably gave him his jabs, so all that he needs is time, and keep the flies away.

Quirky - The vet told me they don't like to stitch if not totally necessary as it makes a pocket for infection, so it is better to let it run.

Nasty! A friend of mine's horse ripped her back leg open on a horsewalker at college - that was a horrid injury and it took a good long time to heal as she developed a lot of proud flesh. It did heal though and she was 100& sound afterwards if i recall.

My pony, whilst on loan to a girl, did a similar thing to what this horse has done. He jumped a very high post and rail fence (something he would NEVER ever do!) to get to a mare in the next field. They put him back in his field but the c*cky s*d did it again except this time he didn't quite make it and smashed the rail and ripped he chest/shoulder open. I actually never saw the wound and assume it maybe wasn't as bad as the pic you have shown but he healed fine (they decided to leave him with the mare after all that! Lol) and you cant even tell now at all.

Hopefully yours will heal fine. We had another horse who got tangled in barbed wire - it does make a horride mess of skin. He was fine within a relatively short time too though. I think the area yours has done it in does tend to heal quite well.
 
Vibes from me. Wounds like that tend to look bad for a while, because they heal from the inside out. Just keep it as clean as possible and I'm sure it'll heal over in no time. :)

It was pretty horrid, I was called late at night and was only told to get to the yard quickly, to call the vet and that they couldn't catch her. The vet was wonderful and she stopped me feeling guilty about not having insisted that the YO removed all the wire (or replacing it myself).


OP. I'm sure that your horse will heal really well, it's amazing how they can recover. Lots and lots of healing vibes. :)
 
Oh no! How awful! I hope he heals well and will try my best to send strong get well vibes!

As we are in the year 2011 I think barbed wire should be banned there are far better alternatives now!

Here's lots of healing hugs! My little mare had a barbed wire injury, wire got wrapped around her leg when she was 2 years old. At the time, it was really nasty but healed up very well - and another vote for manuka honey - amazing stuff!

a lot of years ago my friends mare jumped three post and rail fences to get into a stallion's paddock, did the deed and then he chased her about for a bit. They think that in a panic she jumped back out into the next field, tearing her belly open from between her front legs, almost to her teats. She was found almost by accident as they had a party in one of their barns and a neighbour came down the road past her field and thought she looked "a bit odd". The vet arrived a few minutes later and spent about 45 minutes stiching her back up - he had to stitch the skin back to her sides before he could stitch the edges back together.

Not only did it heal, but she kept the foal and she was back eventing once it was weanded. You'd never have known there was even a scar there!
