Just had vet out to horse - thought sore back - osteo came out on Saturday and "put back in" then Sunday am, same again, sore with hand pressure (just behind saddle area). Got vet out today and he has advised me to double bute for one week then drop down to one bute and try and ride in walk and trot only - then third week (still on bute) canter in school or on hack to see if continously bronking with me again. Said if this is the case then could be kissing spine? Only had him a year and 3 weeks - what triggers kissing spine? (he is 7 yrs) please keep fingers crossed for him.

Kissing spines is a growth thing normally, sorry!
BUT...... it can be operated on!! Have know a couple that have gone down this route!
 
Thanks for article Sofie - doesn't look good does it? I don't know what to do if it is this? Don't want him in pain but can't afford to keep on livery if not ridden?

Heard of plenty of horses that have carried on competing after KS operation. Not sure how long recovery time is though, as never had first hand experience with it. Sure he'll be fine!
 
PC I am rather horrified that the vet has said it could be KS from such a quick diagnosis. So the horse has a sore back, well it could be a million different things. TBH when I have a horse with back soreness the last person I would get out is the vet - I would have a good decent physio take a look, Mctimoney or similar and see what they think. I do think it has been rather rash of the vet to mention KS at this stage!

Have to agree with the above, Good Luck.
 
My vet diagnosed kissing spine pretty quickly with my ex SJ, he did advise me to get a back man out to check him and give his opinion before I shelled out for an x ray.. he was right and unfortunately it was in a place that was pretty impossible to operate so he is retired. Vet said in most cases an op. will sort it nowadays!

Fingers crossed for you that its not that serious!

I am sorry to hear this but as Weezy says get a McTimony person out to take a look. They are excellent and it could be sore for a different reason.

Fingers crossed - but try not to worry too much at the moment. There are lots of possibilities - kissing spines is only one. Even if it is it could be treatable anyway. Hopefully it will turn out not to be the case. but even if it is at least you will know what you're dealing with and how to treat it and will be able to do what's best for your horse.
 
Hi Weezy - thanks for reply - have had physio and osteo out already and they suggested vet as no better after treatment. When you run hands down either side of spine at lumbar vert point his back legs nearly collapse, poor lad.

What is difference between McTimoney and osteo and physio? Do they do bones or muscles mainly? When osteo has been out he is fine until turned out in field and then pain is back again.
 
Kissing Spine diagnosis seems to be one that is most in fashion at the moment doesn't it???

I bought my new horse knowing that he had a sore back. It has been quickly established that this has been from a poorly fitted saddle, and the problems are purely muscular.

He is now receiving treatment from a Bown therapist, and being ridden quietly in a properly fitted saddle.

Don't panic. Rest, physio and time and I bet your horse will be as right as rain.

) and this is ok, he is on 2 x bute a day for a week and after day three still no improvement?? Surely it would be kicking in by now?
