A real health and safety NO NO. We were discussing health and safety in the stable yard last night and realised most the things we do would be against it.

This s all came about as I was sat in the door way to my girlies stable with the door wide open playing with her treat ball with her, she was being very affectionate and kept putting her head down for cuddles and returning her ball back to me.

Now if she had of decided to bolt out I would have been screwed but the truth of the matter is she is not that kind of horse she is respectful of my space and not only that but I could walk away leaving that door open for anything up to an hour (which I did once before by mistake forgetting I had left her door open) and she will still be there when I get back.

I often crouch under her tummy whilst attaching my 5 point to my stud girth or if i’m feeling lazy I sit at her feet applying oil

We do it all the time but do any of us realise? Discuss, what health and safety NO NO’s do we do every day?

haha oh so many things!

my gelding brings himself in from the field minus a headcollar following the others.

when I do my mare's studs I use a swivel desk chair and sit down with a towel over my knee and put her hoof over my knee to clean and put them in (depressingly I am in my teens and my back hurts if I do it stood up and bent over!).

I occasionally hop on my mare bareback in the field with nothing on her for cuddles and to potter round.

I flatschool my mare and schoolmaster gelding without a helmet as I know both of them inside out.. I do however usually wear a helmet and BP to flatschool my youngster!

I often sit down with my retiree when hes having his morning liein for cuddles, he loves them and usually rests his head on my lap/leg :).

I am sure I do plenty of other stuff thats not H&S approved! but screw them none of this has ever hurt me or the horses and we have been doing it years!

i school hack and jump my 17.2hh nut job bareback and when im schooling its in a 10 acre field i dont just do this randomly i dont hae a saddle but when hacking i put a roller on and attach stirrups as he can be a bit of a pain sometimes :)

im to lazy to walk around taz so i walk under him :) wouldnt do this with any other horse though tbh :)

i sit on the floor when brushing his legs and picking his feet out as im too lazy to do it the 'propper' way :o

i quite often hug his bum from directly behind :o

i sprint across our 2 acre field with 2 horses galloping and bucking behind me (often over taking me fly kicking on there way past)

i can think of loads of little things but i dont suppose you want to hear them all :)

When I get girlie in from the field if she is at the far end Ill walk up to her and she will canter or trot beside me to the gate shes so sweet

And even though its not a big deal but to assure people that they are ok to walk their horse behind mine in the barn I stand at her bum till they have passed and i think well shes not going to kick out if I though she would do you reall think I would stand at her bum! lol

I love my horse and she loves me (well I hope she does) and I believe giving them an inch or 2 to be free can help then trust you back

the usual to and from the field in a head collar, when i trim her tail for showing i crouch behind her making sure its level, taking her head collar off to trim her face whiskers, let my dog lead her in from the field - shes stupid enough to follow him :o i probably do a few more things that would be classed as compleetly un-H&S but i like to think i do these things in a safe way - if that makes any sense! Bunch of Rebels eh ;)

I was asked to make sure my pony did not do "his antics" when the H&S inspector came [I pointed out that rearing and bucking on the spot would be a good indicator of how H&S was needed, anyway I went in to the arena and did some grid work, but the H&S sent a person in to arena to remove the poles as they were a hazard, fgs!
You will recognise the H&S guy by the Government clothing and the steel toed safety shoes, also neddy mentality.

The best I ever saw (or worst!) was a junior vet who came to take a CEM swab from my BIG 17hh stallion. To get the swab from the right place, she had to make him 'let down' (which he only does when he has an incentive!) So I found her, sitting cross-legged underneath him - facing his hind legs - trying to pull his penis down!

Fortunately Raj has the BEST temperament in the world! I pointed out to her that 999 out of 1,000 stallions would have kicked her head in!
