Hi,

I have started my horse on dengie healthy hoof. She was on a balancer, but i struggle to keep weight on her, and was unsure what to mix with a balancer as i did not want to give her too much vits and mins, so was mixing it with speddi beet, but she did not like the mushyness of it all, i think she likes something to chew.

I was recommended by a friend of a friend to try dengie healthy hoof unmollased, i have started feeding her that and she really likes it, and speddi beet for some weight gain. I am hoping her feet will start to look better.

Has anyone else used healthy hoof, im just wondering what difference you noticed as it's going to take some time before i notice any change.

figgure for a horse that is not in work at the moment this is quite a good feed for her.

I tried it and my horse wasn't keen. I now feed half a mug of speedi beet mixed with supplements and a mug of mirconised linseed and a large scoop of safe and sound just enough to get him to eat the supplements as he's very fussy.

If you want condition I can't recommend micronised linseed enough if you google it or search on here you will get some info. I feed a mug a day so a sack lasts months.

My understanding of Healthy Hoof (and Happy Hoof) is not that they work contain anything particularly special for hooves (though i think they have a low amount of biotin), but they are very low calorie and thus are ideal bulk for good doers who may be prone to laminitis.

If you're struggling to keep weight on, I'd not use Happy/Healthy Hoof, rather something like Alfa A and a separate hoof supplement such as biotin.

I feed it, had no problems with keeping weight on and only fed a scoop a day along with his probalance vits. Will prob all a bit of speedibeet come winter just to make sure he keeps his weight :) much prefer it to happy hoof which is full of mollasses!

I was hoping more people might use it. I picked it for a few reasons, but im wondering if i should look out for something else. She is not a hard keeper so to speak, but would not maintain weight on that alone, hence the speddi beet.

I wanted something low sugar, low starch, high fibre as i see no reason to feed her cereal as she is not in work and she likes the dengie healthy hoof unmollased so it makes no sense buying the molasses one if she will eat the one with out it. , but balancer alone would not keep her at a good weight. I will consider farriers formula or something if i see no results on this feed. Her feet are not in a very bad state, but i feel it is something that could be improved.

I feed it to my ID x mare, not in the quantities they say otherwise her weight would explode so I top it up with Formula4Feet. Works for her with her big flat feet.

Are you feeding the correct amounts of the chaff?

Personally I like allen and page feeds, fast fibre would do you fine. My mare is fussy to drink so at least getting super soaked feeds I know she is getting water in!
