Healthy Horses doing nothing??

I'd better dust off my gun then. We have 6 in our herd and only 1 is ridden much (and even then only when I can be bothered in this weather). One is ridable but not been ridden for over a year. The others are youngsters although 2 are old enough to break at the moment.

Once I'm done I shall make some horseskin goods and Stroppy will be extra happy on two accounts: my useless (and definintly cobby, barring the rather beautiful sportshorse) horses will be dead and no longer upsetting her sensibilities AND they will then have a 'use' in life (or possibly death).

I have to say I'm more than a little dissapointed in the quality of trolls these days - they run out of ideas so quickly and resort to insults and profanities far too quick. :(

(p.s on our large estate with 20 odd horses only one is in constant work with a real 'job' and of all the horses he's the one I feel most sorry for:( He spends 18hrs a day in his pristine stable so his owner feels he's 'well-loved' whilst our unfortnuate lot spend their out, muddy and hairy, playing with their friends.

I thought about starting a thread titled 'The declining quality of trolls' or 'The idiots guide to successful trolling' ;);)

This is a very poor effort and I think it might be a poster that has had a recent forum 'holiday' The style, or lack of it, rings a bell.

Also, someone near me keeps 30 horses, rides 2 of them and breeds a couple of foals out of a couple of mares each year and that's it. The rest of them just fester in herds in fields.

I don't keep 30 horses, but the rest of your statement could refer to me.

It's what I do, what I choose to do, and, quite frankly, so what?

It is none of anybodys' business what I, or anyone else, do with their horses and comments like that truly hack me off, God knows why, because I actually don't give two hoots what anyone else thinks, that's the joy of being a GOW;) My horses don't care that they are fed, healthy, happy and doing sod all until I choose to ride them, break them or to sell them on.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't eh?

Actually I've just looked up Richard Ramsey........He does livery..............

"Also available is summer livery in the fields living out, for any horses who are having a 'year off.'

pmsl stroppy and mcnaughty, you'd better go and shoot them!!

I'm still waiting my reply on this; stroppy you told me to go look him up and I did, so come on your thoughts on his liveries having a year off to fester?

I'd like to put another point over too; My ponies are my pets :D I even take them for walks just like I do with the dogs; I don't think them as being expensive; They cost me very little actually, bit of feed, feet trimmed, they live out and have not seen a vet in over 9 years so are very healthy.

I don't smoke, rarely drink, they cost less than it would to run a car ( I actually share one) I'm sure other people feel the same, sacrifices are made.

Excellent idea....is it worth the effort though? ;)

Good for you angieandben - hope you and your horses go on to enjoy long and fruitful walks in the park - I taught my cat to play fetch perhaps you horses can learn this too and on the way back from the cornershop carry your Sunday Sport for you too.

Can I suggest you go back and read your own posts and you saying that all showing was the same as taking a dog to a show and that the only work that horses should do was ploughing.

I am really not that concerned what everyone does with their horses - You can stick them in a field all day long and watch them from out of your kitchen window when you do the washing up. But personally and there it is the key word "personally" I cannot see the point of not using them for something - now as this is a forum and we are all entitled to our own views - hopefully that will be the end of it - you go and have your views and stop trying to press your views on to others. Oh and I DO NOT think that all horses that are not worked should be shot - that is absolutely rediculous - and I have never said that and never will!

Ah but I'll be having the last laugh when I CAN take my ponies through town to do the shopping when there's no fuel left and horses are the only transport;

Sunday Sport, nah far too intellectual for me

But why the sarcasm? So what If I take my ponies to town, the're quite partial to a bag of chips :)

Good on you A&B - I quite often take my nags to the village shop to pick up the papers - and of course a shop always has food 'possibilities'. They are nosy and seem to enjoy it (think they'd be quite jealous of your ponies going into town, all those shops!:))

And for those of you who think this is beneath competition horses - it's a blooming good way to de-spook - they are never daft if they see a burgerbar at a show.

i'd quite like the option to NOT ride/exercise my horse as much as i do - but at 20 with arthritis - she is better the more mobile she is kept - so some form of work needs to be done 5 days out of 7 - in the current weather - i am very jealous of those who can choose not to ride for 3 or 4 weeks:)
Incidentally, does EVERY thread on H&H have to include personal attacks or just the ones i read?:)

We have 3 horses- 2 are mine and are ridden regularly.

OH's mare is hardly ever ridden.....but shes well cared for and we can afford her.

.....she is 'used' to give pleasure to OH and as a companion to the one that is left when I am riding the other. She's happier than she's ever been.

Additionally.....whats it got to do with you OP? To much time on your hands at the mo? School broken up?

I think there are a couple of people getting their knickers in a twist because they think horses should have a "job" to do, obviously hacking and taking them for walks is not working, just pure pleasure.

I agree keeping them moving as they get older helps them enourmously thats why mine live out, they keep fairly fit and healthy, but that doesn't mean you have to ride them. I walked our little pony out for over an hour last week, he loves it, people love to see him and he is completely at ease with anything he sees, and yes he has been into town to the chip shop :)

It is called O P I N I O N AngieandBen - so no, they do not "have to do a job". Yes, hacking is working. Retired, young, sick, lame, nutty - good reasons to turn away to their hearts content. Again, just in case you have missed the point - it is an opinion - you do not have to start an argument every time someone disagrees with you.

Yes. It is a new rule. Now, if you will excuse me I have heard that people in AAD are getting on far too well, so I'm going to go and call them all boggle-eyed batty old bintbags...:p

Says the person that started the thread "More Money than Sense or Just Horse Lovers" of course you're not looking for an argument? pmsl

BTW I'm both, lots of money and a horse lover

You very seriously need to read some of the rubbish you are writing before you hit the submit button.

I am stunned at the vitriol in this thread, I am one of those who keep their horses in full livery but do not ride much at the moment so you could be talking about me, but there is a very good reason. I love my horses, they are the reason I work hard and they are my sanity check. When life permits I ride at weekends, show jump, hunt, and team chase but for the moment everything is on hold. I provide what they need, my hunter is worked four or five times a week, does it matter if it is not by me? I think that some of the comments are based on envy; this is not a nice character trait.

Those that are throwing negative comments about have you ever asked the people around you why they don't ride before making accusations about how they look after their horses? You may find some very sad stories behind the non-ridding, some have already been described. You have been condemning these people without any evidence and suggesting that horses that are not ridden should be shot, shame on you!

A horse can have multiple roles, does it matter what the role is so long as it is well cared for and happy? Being an expensive pet is not a crime so long as the owner can afford to pay their way! To be happy it does not mean it has to be in a competitive home, after all most people do not compete.

.

generally it is one poster who appears to have an issue with other people at her livery yard and doesnt want to confront them personally so is slagging them and their horses off on this forum. There seems to be one other person in agreement with the basic point without being so nasty about it. Most of the others are saying mind your own business then getting mega stroppy answers off a member called stroppy ( who isnt stroppy but has a horse called stroppy):)

This post is a perfect example of pure jealousy by the looks of things. Stop worrying about what everyone else wants to do with THEIR money and THEIR horses. Keep your beak out and get on with it.

Can't sleep with toothache so checking out threads I missed.

Can't believe I missed this one, I've seen some right rude and obnoxious people on this forum, but this is the worst yet. Its no wonder this forum now has such a poor reputation and the issue of it being argumentative and rude keeps coming up on threads.

And to think others have recently been banned for way less, shocking.
Sack the fat controller !
