Heart set on a £4500 mare and foal cheval liberte. Head kind of set on it too, very light perfect for what I want (single trailer for 17hh house). However only have £1700 saved so far.
Shopping fever says buy rice Richardson £1500 trailer that I can afford now. Head says how much benefit am I getting for the expense of the CL.
What to do, what to do?

It depends on the condition of the RR, but generally speaking I'd get the RR anyway. My experience of CLs are that they seem pokey and flimsy (I'm used to a 510 though).

The advert is good, list of all recent new bits (new tyres, floor, electrics etc). I might message the seller and ask if they have receipts for the work as I think I am just a bit sceptical of 2nd hand trailers :(

Depends if there's a reason you specifically wanted to go for that brand rather than say an ifor, or the reason you thought to choose a single over a double , and also whether your towing vehicle will be up to the double .

I tow a 511 now that I hire, vehicle capable (big 4x4). I only ever want to tow one horse and the 'single' appeal was it being smaller, lighter and narrower. I went for CL as they are the only brand that I can find that do a 'single' suitable safely for a 17hh horse.

I am just flipping in my head between 'I don't NEED a mare and foal box but I want one' and 'I could have my own trailer NOW if I got a 510 or RR'

What about getting the Richardson and taking partition out ? That way you have ample space to tack up inside if you need .

Just to add another spanner in the works, I have a brand new single ifor and it's the same height as the 511 which is taller than they used to make the singles.

Hmmm, spanners everywhere :)
I worry about the proper single being too narrow and therefore unstable with a 17hh but I will have a look at the dimensions thanks : ) The RR comes with partitions and full breach bars so that is definitely an option.
Unfortunately the trailer is not near me though perhaps the as check trailers as well as cars :)

If you look at RR make sure the wheels are upright and the same as they have torsion bar suspension and they have a habit of wearing out and its very expensive to fix .

If it were me, I would be looking for a standard 2 horse trailer and just take the partition out. In terms of re-saleability it is much easier to sell these kinds of trailers. It sounds as though your car is capable which is normally the reason why people go for the single i.e. Weight.

I'd get the double and take the partition out too.

If you are towing with a 4x4, the very slight difference in width will make no different in terms of visibility etc. why do you want a narrower one? I can't think of a single benefit.

Tacking up inside is a luxury. I would get the biggest and newest you can afford personally.

I recently sold my CL mare and foal trailer for £1750. Bought a brand new double CL as have got 2 horses to take out. Really miss the mare and foal trailer much easier to tow as was same width as car plus we've had to purchase a larger car to tow the double. When daughter goes to uni will def go back to a mare and foal trailer with the one horse.
