Heart Mumars

My horse, a wb, has a systolic heart murmur. She is fine, hoons around the feild and the lunge pen fine. She is our work in progress.

Vet said the fitter and get her weight right (which having a warmblood who thinks she is a good doer cob doesnt help  and she should have a problem.

Tho he did say systolic heart murmurs are the ones to have if you are going to have a horse with one.

I don't have much experience of them. I did know an elderly mare who had one. Was already retired but the vet said he wouldn't recommend riding her again. She was a pretty chilled sort but the vet said it was possible if she was wildly excited she could just drop. She did manage at least a few manic group blasts while turned out though without problems. Owner & vet both agreed that if she went playing with her friends it was a nice way to go, & she wasn't the type to take fright easily. Never did effect her, was pts from general old age.

My first pony had one which I did not find out about despite her having been vetted until she after she had her foal and that foal was about 13 herself. Both of them had heart murmurs and were fully ridden with no problems at all.

I know someone with a pony who has it who will not ride it as a result. I know there are different grades of heart murmurs and my ponies were reasonably severe but I cannot remember what level now.

I have had mixed experiences - I've known one that it didn't impact at all, and another that was diagnosed and sadly died within a few weeks of diagnosis. The first was picked up in a routine check and the horse had no outward symptoms, whereas the other was only diagnosed because he was showing serious symptoms so it was always going to be a worse prognosis for him.

I think it really depends on the type and severity.
