Please can someone advise if a Grade 2/6 holosystolic heart murmur in a very very unfit 6 year old over the mitral valve is anything to worry about. A vet has given him a 5 stage vetting and after exercise it went up to 3/6 but has said it wont effect showjumping but of course it will affect my insurance...

Horse was also very underweight at time of vetting (3 weeks ago) but is filling out rapidly (was left to rot in field for 2 months).

Any advise PLEASE?

We sold a horse a couple of years back who was found to have a heart murmur when vetted, I can't remember what grade it was. The purchaser was concerned as this was to replace a horse which she had lost due to some sort of heart problem. The vets organised for a specialist to come to do further tests and on the basis of this the purchase went through and the purchaser was able to insure him. The specialist was called Lesley Young. If you do a google you can find quite a lot of info on her, she is based in Newmarket.
Our horse was also 6 and we didn't have him vetted when we bought him as he was a cheap project horse. He was sold to do BE Intro and Pre Novice. I agreed to split the cost of the tests with the purchaser whatever the outcome. I think it was a few hundred pounds each. Ours was in good condition both when we bought him and when we sold him about 8 months later.
Best of luck.

My old horse had a heart murmur apparently which was only found out about last year. He was hunting and drag hunting until the age of 20 and he was PTS because of he broke down, nothing to do with his heart. The vet said that most horses have a heart murmur or irregular heartbeat and its nothing to worry about usually.

Q has a grade 2 heart murmur.
It was found at his routine yearly check up when he was 7 (He's now 10) I had an ultra sound & an EGC done which confirmed it was grade 2.
My vets said to treat him as normal & my insurance company haven't excluded it.
He does dressage & hacks & it's never been a problem. I have it listened to whenever the vets are out, just to make sure it hasn't got any worse.

My horse has a grade 4 murmur that does not affect him in any way - but if you are worried speak to Leslie Young who is a complete star and sees my horse every year to assess him
