Yesterday i had to call the emergency vet out for my 5yr ISH, she was diagnosed with spasmodic colic which after some drugs is now all sorted but while she was listening to her heart she said she had a massive heart murmur, apparently this is rare in horses her age. She said she should have a scan ASAP, but i was wondering would this heart problem mean the end of competitions for us ? also what will they do in this scan and will it be be done here or at the vets ? I was very worried about this as i dont know much information about it so any info or experiences would be great help :)

Thanks in advance :)

N.B she advised not to ride until the scan

My friend's TB ex-racer has a heart murmer which was not picked up on a 5star vetting. We are assuming he didn't have it then as it was only picked up incidently. He is in full time work and competeing successfully. If a vet hadn't mentioned it, we would never have noticed.

I have since learnt that there are different stages of heart murmer. Some can come and go with viral infection.

It sounds like the vet is concerned about your horse's murmer - it is likely things may settle down when the horse's whole system is out of stress.

That is very cofomorting :)
when we bought her she had a 5 star vetting and it wasn't picked up (1 & 1/2 yrs ago) i have been riding her 6 days a week and competing up untill now, was reading somewhere that it could have benn caused because she was in pain with the colic so may settle after the colic has passed- do yuo know if this is true ?
thanks

Sorry to hear this.
A friend's horse has recently been diagnosed with a heart murmur, although it turned out prev. owners kept it a bit quiet! Said horse was fine, but not allowed to compete xc but still school xc and hack etc as well as normal sj and dressage, which wasn't a problem in this case as he's getting on a bit anyway. So shouldn't end your competition career, with her, you might just have to adapt, but I do hope you don't! So hard if she's that young.
Hope it all works out for you x
