Heartbreaking loss-my lovely rescue pony dies from acute grass sickness

Last night ranks as probably the worst night of my life when our lovely SSPCA rehome pony was pts after being diagnosed with grass sickness. He was only 5 and we had backed him and had such plans for him, he was the sort which would become a fantastic family pony. RIP Vinnie you were the best and we miss you so badly.

It was the speed-from calling the vet to pts was only about two hours. I thought he had colic but his stomach was full of foul liquid and there was no question of the diagnosis. He was given painkillers and died when he was feeling a little better. I am truly heartbroken,. I have never lost a youngster before.
 
Sad news - it is a horrid and mysterious condition which I saw several cases of in the Yorkshire Dales. One lady lost 4 of her treasured team but one happily survived after a chronic case was painstakingly nursed back to full health. But, you have done the right thing if it was acute EGS.

Anyone reading this should consider a donation to the EGS Fund or perhaps when you have recovered, remember him with a fund raising event to help fund research.

Do you mind me asking where your pony lived (County) ?

So, so sorry to hear this. I too lost my 5 yr old boy on Friday, although I had time to get used to it (not that you can get used to it).

RIP Vinnie, maybe you will see my Jay over there and havemfun galloping about.
 
So sorry for your loss. I too have lost a baby to this terrible disease. At least he is now pain free and you showed him what it means to be loved :)

So sorry you lost him to such a cruel disease, which strikes young horses disproportionally:-(( try to be glad that you have a home to a rescue case and you did everything for him to give him a bright future. He knew he was in a loving home,

And some kind of event to remember him by is a lovely idea, and to raise funds to combat this evil horror which claimed his life so quickly. There was no doubt it was acute and no option but to pts but its so hard. my husband and kids are all gutted too. He was a joy of a pony with a great future ahead.

Our local RC regularly donates to the EGSF when any of our shows make a good profit.

Always worry about GS this time of year in Scotland especially after a dry cool period.
 
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss :(

I for one would be more than happy to participate in a fundraising event in memory of Vinnie and any others on here who's horse has suffered from this.
 
So sorry to hear this, I lost my Appaloosa last month to this and I know just how heart breaking it is. You did the right thing and he didn't suffer. So sorry x
 
I'm so sorry for your loss. GS is a truly horrible disease, I've never experienced the acute form but chronic was horrific enough. At least he's pain free now, and you know that it was absolutely the right thing to do x
 
An absolute tragedy for you. Giving a loving home to a rescue pony is a wonderful thing to do, and I'm sure Vinnie finally managed to enjoy his life, knowing he was so loved at last, enough to end his suffering when the time came, all too very soon... truly sorry for your loss...
 
so sorry for your loss. I lost my beautiful 4 yr old mare to grass sickness last month. I dont know how to do links but you might want to read my post "lost my princess".
