Heartbroken - Loan horse to go back Saturday

Really feel for you.

Happened to me, got a text on the Tuesday saying he had been sold and was going on the Friday. Turned out well for me as a friend persuaded owner to let me have him, but I well remember how heartbroken I was.

One positive - you were able to trust another horse, it will happen again, very best of luck.

I think it is really bad that owners do this - can you imagine if it was the other way round and you'd said you had to give him back within that kind of timescale?! Really the contract should have been done with a longer notice period from both sides so that it was fair but unfortunately if this was not the case then there is not a lot you can do. Why did she loan him in the 1st place though? 3 years is a long loan and for then to suddenly want him back at such short notice seems very strange.

Maybe you should ask her if you can keep in touch and visit him and also (if you wanted) let her know your offer to buy him still stands and for her to let you have first refusal should she dicide to tell.

Often makes me wonder about these owners though as they never seem to think about the actual horse. This happened to me when a loaned ended and, without going in to details, the way the owner arranged for the horse to be returned just screamed to me that she actually didn't know her horse very well at all! I still regret giving him back, it was horrible and I dread to think what life he had afterwards - All I know was he was happy and put on weight when he was with me but sadly was not with me long enough

This is horrible, I can really feel for you aswell.
Its coming up a year since my old loan mare went back to her owners.
This is the horrible side of loaning so after she went back I said id never loan again and then bought my mare 2months after she went back.

I still remember the day she went back .. she was the perfect loader and she refused to go onto the trailer .. when she did she picked up a fuss I thought her back legs were going to come out of the back of the trailler she was kicking so hard!

I did offer to buy her aswell but they said no .. three weeks down the line they sold her .. I actully met her new owners the other week at a show .. and she was asking me how Gypsy was to load etc and I told her she was perfect but she wasnt great when she left.

So since that she hates loading! She actully got loose at the show and ran up to the gate that we used to ride in and out of to the show and tried to get out - the new owner said she thinks she was trying to come back to my fields .. Gypsy new just where she was going too!

Anyways theres me going on etc but I really hope that it all goes well and you don't get too upset by it etc and just focus on your new boy coming! I think thats the only thing that kept me going! lol x

i really feel for you, but it's better to have loved and lost tha never to have loved at all, and i think the owner is out of order to demand that she gets the horse back at such short notice when you've had it for so long.
i have an ex-racehorse on loan for the summer while im home from uni and it upsets me just knowing that he has to go back to his owner in october so i sort of wish i didn't know it had to happen. and it's not even like i'll be able to find a yard near uni to take him to because i'll be moving out of the country for 9 months! :(
you'll find another horse that you'll be able to work with and have just as much fun with, i know it.

GypsyGirl, that's such a sad story:(:(.

Do you know why the owner wouldn't let you buy her then went on to sell her to someone else? Do you think she was already sold when she took her back? And do you often think about the day you could buy her back, given the chance?

It's like the classic Black Beauty story all over again:(

It seems that loaning should be renamed, "a licence to heartbreak":(

Im not sure why they wouldnt. The reason why she went back was because when I first took her on loan (I had her for 2years) the owner said that they will carry on paying insurance as long as I get her vaccinations up to date again (they were 3years out of date) and I had her teeth done aswell and the dentist said that they hadnt been done for a very long time etc.

So I stuck to my deal and they stuck to theres .. 2 years later they came up with a new loan agreement saying that im to pay for everything now, vet bills, insurance etc and I said to them that I stuck to my deal but now there changing it? So I said that I want to buy her and then ill pay for her insurance etc and they said no and then sent me a text saying youve got 4 weeks with her and then im taking her back tell me whens good for you ..

They told me that they didnt want to sell her but the next 2weeks she was in the friday-ad. I had an amazing bond with Gypsy .. we got on so well and the owners never really bothered to come up and when they did they just said horrible things about her saying shes fat etc .. and Gypsy didnt know them anymore .. so all my friends in the field etc all said that they think they took her back to kinda prove a "point" that actully shes not mine she is still theres and they can do what they want with her.

So the day they came up to collect her .. Gypsy didnt know them so they were trying to get her to walk onto the trailer she had no idea what was going on as if a stranger was taking her .. I could see the white in her eyes from where she was staring at me calling me as if to say "what are you doing to me" .. still makes me cry now :(

but oh well .. she belongs to two young girls now who take her out to pc twice a week competing etc and I now have my 15.2 6year old tb that I bought on from scratch etc so im just focusing on me and my new mare .. she is MY mare and no1 can take her away from me :)

And she 100% knows shes mine too as shes a very one-to-one mare and lovesss a big fuss from me .. very marish to other people but then maybe thats my fault as I do mollycuddle her :S shes just a very spoilt mare opsie!! lol :)

(very sorry longggg post) lol

Also to add to my post up there ^^^ reply to one of the quotes.
If I could buy her back then id 100% buy her back .. not for me but my two nieces started to ride her and they loved her. But then a part of me would feel bad as I think Maisie (my new mare) might get very jelous even though id still be maisies lol.

Id also buy her back if she was retired in years to come as I think it would be nice for her to spend her retirement in her old home where her old friends are mostly retired etc.

Now I have leaky eyes!!:(:(

Now I have leaky eyes!!:(:(

Lol, I get teary eyes aswell and when I saw her at the show I got teary aswell because we had my friends horse there and they were so close to each other .. and they havnt seen each other for nearly a year and the owner got the girls to bring Gypsy over to us and at first they were grazing and they got closer and closer and then they were face to face licking each others noses! Couldnt believe it they reconised each other so well lol .. apantly Gypsy had been really naughty that day and its because she knew where she was (it was the first time they had taken her to this show)

And the showground was our regular ground as it was our riding club field so every week we were there and she knew all the horses around her aswell as we used to hack over together.

But I have her owner on facebook now too so I get sent regular updates of how she is and how shes doing etc and i think ill be seeing a lot more of her now aswell as they come to these shows quite regular.

The new owner has known Gypsy since she was a foal so all turned out well really! Im just happy that shes no longer in her old owners hands and shes actully belongs to people who enjoy her and love her! I doubt very much that one day id be able to buy her back but I can always hope! lol

I might be confused but was this the girl who wanted to take him to college but he's an older horse with some issues? Is she still taking him to college?

So sorry for you :( Some people are just horrid.
