Heartbroken...what should i do?

Has the owner actually refused your offer? Or are you working yourself up in anticipation?

There is a saying that a horse is only worth as much as somebody is prepared to pay for it, actually, I think it's only a part of the equation, the other, equally important part is what the seller is prepared to let the horse go for :)
In reality, the only true, objective value of any horse is in its weight, all the rest is emotion and perspective.

Nobody can seriously tell you how much the mare is worth on here, we haven't seen the horse. To the owner, she's worth £2900, how much is she worth to you? Is £1500 because that's how much you have, or is it because you believe that is her value?

What I can tell you, though, is that if the owner reads this thread, your negotiations will become a whole lot harder.

you dont mention where the horse would go back to if you were to terminate the loan agreement... given that the owner lives abroad. Given the horse market at the moment id be tempted to stick with the 1500 take it or leave it option. Like others have said she will soon be costing him money . As others have said there are plenty of teen agers without sweet itch and maybe less isssues looking for good homws at that price. The only thing is that only say it if you mean it!

Martlin...I know her owner doesn't go on any forums so I'm not worried. If she went back she will go to a riding school in Hertfordshire and left in a field until he sold her

I did not read that you had no money, just that you do not think you should have to pay his new price.!!!!!

If it is any help we took on a loan at the beginning of the year, and he is worth far more than we were willing to pay for him, ax he is a first pony, not that we would not pay it or have the money.

As luck would have it, his owners circumstances changed, and we have now bought him for far less than he is worth, and yes he is defiantly into 4 figures, which I add we did not pay.

He has a home for life with us, so his actual worth is not important, but my point is, that some times a little value to the owner makes a difference.

So hold tight and lady luck may just be on your side x

I will have the money in a few months but think he is asking way too much for her! I know value is not important, but you have to have a limit, otherwise you will end up broke. He has not got back to me yet but not keeping my hopes up as I don't think he will go that low...if he can sell her for 2900 I will give him a medal!

Its not often i agree with martlin, but this is completley correct

You dont know what happens behind closed doors - you cant be 100% sure the owner does not frequent forums.

TBH if you havent got the money then why are you getting worked up? IF he said yes ok £1500 in the next 7 days what would you do? I think you need to take a step back from the situation and be realistic. I dont think £2000 is an unfair price but if you havent got the money all this is talk and worrying is futile.

So all your worries are based on just conjecture then... He hasn't actually said ''no'' to you yet. Not keeping your hopes up is one thing, but worrying yourself silly in advance is another :) Just wait for the bloke to get back to you.

I don't think u read it properly...I am agreeing a price, I have explained to the owner it won't be until after Xmas and I am on a budget, I don't think it is wrong to agree a price beforehand!

ok so finally had a response! He sold her back in April for 2500 but she came back as person couldn't handle her! He reckons he sold his wife's 18 year old gelding for 1500 to the riding school where they were kept. So annoyed he is trying to get even more money out of me! Has come down to 2100, which looking at what i can get for that i think is still fairly high. Not sure if i can try and get him down a bit more or what to do really. He is over in the falkland islands atm, he obviously doesn't realise it is a buyers market atm. Still not quite sure what to do, if i do buy her i might take out a small loan then at least i know she is mine!

Agree a final offer or speak your heart out to him. he will probally get anoyyed after a while so do a quick negotiation and then get a payment plane or deposit in place quick so the deal has been done i rekon meet in the middle kinda thing at like 1800 or 2000 as with potential she could be worth more! its just personal worth!

Can't really offer advice as it isn't a situation I have been in but I hope it works out for you and your mare as you seem to have a great bond and she has settled well with you. Fingers crossed he see reason and you get to stay together.

yeah, i was hoping he would come down to 1800, so a bit disappointed, but seeing as he has made me wait nearly a week, think i might do the same, at least until i have decided what i am going to do. Surely it must ring alarm bells if she was sold for 8 weeks and then had to go back, at least he knows i have had for a few a months, and am less likely to send her back. Plus i know all her faults, at least most of them and her quirks! especially when putting her saddle on, and almost taking off with me on a hack after being spooked...luckily i can handle it. But i don't feel he is taking that into account.

explain that to him and say 1800 final offer and she will be well looked after and will keep you updated with her progress and then discuss a payment plan and deposit if he agrees
