I will be getting the vet out, but just picking your brains...

My mare had been lame for 2 days on off hind with swelling around her windgalls, she was then sound for 3 days before i rode her out for a 15/20 minute walk to make sure she was okay. She seemed fine out, but after i got her back her legs were very hot (down the back of each leg between knee/hock and fetlock) The hinds were particularly hot (could feel the heat even with cold water from hose running over it) and the fronts were quite warm. No swelling at all, even a few hours after.

Is there a general reason why a horse would have heat in all four tendons? Is it possible/common for a horse to strain all four at the same time? I've known horses with tendon injuries but have only ever come across ones with 1 strained/torn tendon. Could it be a fitness (or lack of) issue?

Thanks in advance! :)

Maybe i should have said 'heat in tendons in all four legs'!

Thanks for your post :) I do realise there is more than one tendon in each of the lower legs, I'm presuming the damage/strain on my mare is of the superficial flexor tendons as if it was anything deeper i'm guessing she would still be lame..

No one is going to diagnose your horse on an internet forum. Your horse could well be lame in one, two, three or all four legs simultaneously - and multilateral lameness is often quite hard to spot.
You really need your vet to have a look.
S :D

would you happen to use boots on a regular basis? boots heat delicate sinue tissue, might be worth looking up dr hilary clayton, id assume your cold hosing , is there any history of lyphangitus, prob spelt wrong , i cant even spell my company name right!

Thank you for that.. I do use boots regularly so that could be an option, i'll research that now!

Yep i am cold hosing..

and lymphangitis.. i hadn't thought of that, but i just looked it up and i can't say the symptoms sound like hers.. although i know all horses will have varying degrees of the symptoms.. so it is a possibility. I'll certainly mention it to my vet!

i put hilary;s theory to the test with sports breathable boots and used those thin thermometre strips inside for 25 mins or so, the results were quite shocking really, frozen wet nappies (clean ones):Dare good over a thin layer such as a tea towl and wrapped on for 30 mins can help, one of mares used to get lyphanwhatist her last 2 bouts were just heat and puffiness the scabs and the rest never came, but im sure the vet will be able to shed more light on things good luck
