yesterday I posted that the farrier had found a little crack in my boys heel - this morning I've detected some heat in the same hoof - high up near the coronary band. He's on bute last day is tomorrow then I'm supposed to call the vet again - what to do!!!!!

Hi - yes sorry he is lame - had vet out last Friday and he found nothing obvious so popped him on bute for a week. Yesterday farrier came and took show off lame leg - so he is unshod on on foot - thats where the heat is. Its not hot hot - just warmer than the others and only in one side not all round.

agree with farrier, abcess, hence why i asked if he was lame, get farrier to come back out and take a look, keep the crack clean and cover it if you can with a dry poultice or something to stop anymore foreign bodys getting in.

Mine had exactly the same symptoms two weeks ago - suddenly lame, little heat if hoof and leg but no swelling and no injury site.

Called vet, couldn't find anything. 3 days box rest, poultice and bute. We made two days and he was hairing around like a looney sound as a pound! (he is 29!!)

Occassionally this week the same hoof has had a little bit of heat but no lameness.

Vet said she has dealt with a lot of badly bruised soles due to the very wet weather causing softening of the feet. We think thats what my lad was suffering from as he didn't produce an abcess.

It may just be because his shoe is off. Unshod feet are warmer than shod ones.

What is it with vets "popping a horse on bute" before they know what is causing the lamenss. As far as I am aware, Bute is contra indicated in foot abscesses, which need to develop to break out. Bute suppresses that.
