Heat in leg - to scan or not?

T's not been right on her near fore for a couple of weeks. She's been a bit footy for a while with the hard ground, but is always worse on her near fore. That foot is quite contracted and fairly upright (she's upright all round) - I've had 5 different farriers look at her and NONE think they can improve it but that's a different story...
Every so often she takes a short stride on it, which I had put down to her being footy. We've had a couple of days where she's been slightly lame on it with no heat, no swelling, nothing to see or feel, and then she's sound the next day.

On saturday, she was slightly lame again, but this time there was a small, very localised area of heat on the inside and outside of her leg, poss at the top of her DDFT or CL. Cold hosed and she stayed in yesterday, the heat was gone last night and she was pretty much sound, but was sore turning on it.
She's gone back out today because when she's kept in for any length of time she starts broncing round her huge stable (huge to her!) and when she's out, she doesn't stop eating to move, especially now she's muzzled

so I figured she's better off out.

The other thing is that she was trimmed on tuesday, and although he took her heels down a little bit, I think he's left the toe possibly a bit longer than I'd like (going from past experiences with her feet!).

Vet's coming out thurs, the vet I'd like is on holiday so I'll have to take a chance on who comes, but don't have a huge amount of confidence in some of the others. The last one that came out argued with me that horses don't have phantom pregnancies, until she checked with another vet

So..... do I insist they scan the leg? I'm worried that if she's tweaked something, the more work we do, the more damage we'll do.
(By work - 2yr old mini-, we do 3/4 hr average 3/4 times a week walking and trotting round the edge of fields, we were trying to lose weight and tone the belly for show champs in 3 weeks, I'm supposed to have entries in in 7 days!)
I said about scanning the leg on the phone, and the receptionist replied that the vet would have a look and go from there... Chances are there'll be no heat and she'll probably be sound, can/should I insist they scan?

Also, I'm thinking (again) that I should possibly have that foot xrayed to find out what's going on inside. I asked back in Jan when the vet looked at her feet, but they said we didn't need them.
How much do xrays cost on average, should I go through insurance and risk getting the foot excluded or pay for it myself - do I still have to tell insurance and what happens to any claims then?
Can you tell I've never claimed or used my insurance for anything before?!

Personally I would scan and xray but I would rather be safe than sorry. At the moment, you are going to rest her but do you need to rest her days, weeks or months? The scan and xray will be able to give you a fairly good indication what timescale you are talking. If you start work too early you could do more damage, whereas, get her scanned and find that you need to rest her for 6 months to be as good as new will be worth the wait. If nothing shows up on the scan you have piece of mind. Prices are all different, depending on which vet you use. I usually ask an approx. cost is before they start.
Good luck with whatever you do and let us know the outcome?
