Ok so my horse pulled a shoe at the beggining of the week and the farrier was due to today so I left him for a few days without a shoe... he was fine, no heat and not lameness however today after being shod he immediatley appeared lame so the farrier applied pressure etc and he didnt react so we trotted him up again and he was sound so he said to see how he goes. Well this evening when I got to the yard the heat in the foot was very high and he was quite noticably lame.... any idea what this could be? I'm hoping its not an abcess?

It does sound a bit like an abcess - unless the farrier pricked him while shoeing?

You'll know by the morning how bad or not it is. Is it definitely just heat in the hoof or in the pastern as well. It just seems very odd that the moment he's reshod he goes lame. It would have been understandable if he hadn't coped with being shoeless on that foot. And it would be the weekend too. What a nuisance - and poor fella!
