Heat lumps?

How do u deal with heat lumps? Obviously it's getting hot now and my mare does get heat lumps quite a lot. She has a very light weight rug to stop the flies but thats it. When she comes in te are on her neck mostly but Also on her spine. Is there anything I can do to help calm the lumps down. Am I missing something blindingly obvious? x
 
My horse gets huge swellings and when its bad vet normally gives him a cortisone injection which normally fixes it for the season. I don't even use a fly rug anymore.
 
Haven't had to get it for a few years, will be getting it this year, I think it was only around £20 and vet gave me one to keep on standby if there was another big reaction - I only needed one jab for the season.
