Heat rash under saddle?

Took horse hunting yesterday and had a new half wool nuumed numnah which I'd ridden in for 2 days beforehand.

He was pretty sore on his back when we got home and I wondered whether saddle had pinched him.

Today he has come up in lumps like a rash just below where the panel of the saddle sits. When I took saddle off yesterday all the numnah was wet esp. the quilted bit below panels. Could he have heat rash or something else from the quilted bit?

Will ride him in full sheepskin next time but very strange. Have put aloe vera gel on it. It was slightly noticeable this morning, nearly ok when I got him in and now is really quite noticeable. I changed his rug because I thought he might be too hot. Its only really on his near side. I've never seen anything like it before.

Any ideas? Also in vets.

I suspect it is heat rash - my boy got something similar (bumps about the size of a 10p not painful but quite hard under his saddle) after I used a pad as well as numnah on ahot day when he sweated a lot. It took a month or so to go down. I did a search around on here and it seems quite common. I did give a good wash with hibiscrub but then basically left it. I rode on it after about a week (but I only ride once or twice a week anyway) as was careful not to sweat him up for a number of weeks and also didnt use the pad again...

It sounds a bit like it has been caused by pressure. Is it possible you got a bit tired and could have been sitting with more weight on one side? Easy done if he had mayhaps been a bit keen and you had him at a slight angle.

I could well have done. We did quite a lot yesterday out hunting.

I guess this means I have to get the saddler out again. I used Pete from Pointings and the first time he fitted a saddle that didn't fit. This one was definately supposed to fit and you trust your saddler don't you?!! I have back lady coming out on Weds so will ask her to check saddle before ringing up shouting the odds.

Poor bloody horse - its the second saddle he's had fitted by a professoinal (and supposedly a very good one at that) that isn't right.

Or is it me? The way I ride? I must sit awkwardly. No other horse I've ever ridden has had this reaction so I'd like to think its partly the saddles fault!!

Speak to Pidgeon on here - I'm sure Pidge got something similar recently after an outing to somewhere like Somerford...? I want to say that I think he had steroid cream or something like that for it but can't be sure about that... I will see if I can find the post for you but I'm positive it was basically like inflamed sweat rash.

It sounds to me like sweat rash. I find that sheepskin really holds the sweat or water if it gets wet, more so than just a numnah, so could just be that he was getting to hot under it. If it's coming up in a rash then how about a bath with dilute hibiscrub tomorrow?

I've just been outside to see him and it appears to have spread.

It started off this morning as barely noticeable lumps where the front of the panel sits on the near side. I squeezed aloe vera on it and turned him out. It was hardly noticeable when I brought him back in and now its moving downwards & grown hugely. What on earth is it and why has it only affected one side?!!!

If its pressure from the saddle you would expect it to be one big lump surely? This is lots of different size swellings. He's never had it before - first time I've hunted in this numnah though. He's usually fine in full sheepskin nuumed one. This one is thinner wool and only half wool.

I have a youngster that I bought a new turn-out rug for, the weather was cold when I put rug on but sun came out and he got hot, large lumps on his right-side. Still there several days later but he's not bothered by them. He had some in summer and they took several months to go down and disappear and again on his right side.
