My mare has been a bit off the last couple of days, slugglish, slow and reluctant to move (normally bombing round the field buckaroo'ing and annoying the other horses :p) so i bought her in today for the hottest part of the day 11-3 roughly and she was panting slightly when we went up to turn her back out, shes no longer panting and is drinking but is still not herself and im worrying about her :( It was 34c here today and we are due storms tonight so very hot. Just wondering basicly if this is somthing that she will get over with plenty of fluids and rest or if i need to consult a vet.

Argh please stop me panicing :(:o

Can you get her in and wash her down? It sounds like she is probably hot. My poor boy has been suffering today and we've been nowhere near that hot! Thankfully it's just rained here and it's meant to cool down from now on xx

Is there shade in the field? I would just make sure she has shade, and plenty of clean and preferably cool water. Also a salt lick or electrolytes in a separate water bucket so she can keep her electrolytes up and so keep hydrated.. Maybe also sponge her down if she's really warm to help her cool off? Just keep a close eye on her in this weather, and keep the water supply up, it's all we can really do.. xx

I've got one that hates the heat. Ours wear sweet itch hoodies, and in hot weather i pour lots of water onto the rugs so they are damp, which cools them a lot. We opened our field gate so they could wander into the yard, and they stayed in the stables most of yesterday all by themselves - they would never do this in sleet or rain, but heat and flies send them running for cover!

Hi
It gets up to 45 degrees here sometimes in summer.
With my two, i give them a small feed of speedibeet, made sloppy.
If they are wearing cotton rugs, i hose the rugs, but i find even light cotton rugs heat one of my boys too much.
I also cold hose the horses, scrap the water off, then cold hose again. If only hosing once, when its very hot, it can seem to heat them up.
I would be concerned if one of mine was panting though, that sounds like the horse us a bit more stressed, i'd prob give the vet a ring if i couldnt cool them down fairly quickly.
Kx

Hope all your horses are coping with the heat you guys are getting, we've just had winter and the rainy season up here :D but i dont envy you the temoeratures youve been getting
