Heat Stroke

Yes, we had one who did.
One very hot Sunday lunchtime (32degrees) my 20+ yr old TBxWelshD, who always had problems regulating her temperature, was cantering in small circles near the field gate. The other horses were standing around, looking bemused. I caught her and brought her in, although our stables are not particularly cool in Summer. We poured water over her, offered her a drink, and put wet towels round her head & ears to cool her down. Eventually we turned the hosepipe on her but didn't want to do that at first in case the shock of very cold water was too much. She had always been a bit funny about you touching her ears but she really appreciated this. It took us a while but she did cool down eventually and we put her back out as the temperature dropped. She was fine afterwards. I vaguely remember giving her well-soaked speedibeet to rehydrate her.
I should say though, that she had always been an odd horse, with allergies to all sorts and very sensitive skin. She was a bay roan. And she died aged 24 of a stroke. The other horses (1x black,1x piebald and 1x spotted) were absolutely fine.
