I love Heather Moffett saddles, my riding instructor is taught by Heather and has one of her saddles, so one day he put me on it and oh my god it was fantastic. So so comfy and it put me in the correct position straight away. I rode his horse in it who is....um a bit difficult and he went so well. It was definitely the saddle helping me. It was wierd though at first you feel very perched on top, then suddenly you sink into the lovely gel seat, lol
I've been riding my Andy in my instructor's one for lessons recently and he loves it, hence me buying one of my own. He's difficult to fit being very broad shouldered but with normal withers and a short back and not fully muscled as yet - he's only 6 and Andy's keep growing until they're 8.
I had been riding him in an Albion and though it looked like it fitted okay I wasn't that happy. I had been having problems mounting him - he'd fidget and move backwards. I've now had the Fhoenix a week and he stands stock still when I get on. That tells me he wasn't comfy in his Albion but in his Fhoenix he feels good!
I also decided to see what my Arab was like in the Fhoenix. He's totally different in shape - pronounced wither, slightly dipped back due to his age (he's 18). The great thing with the Fhoenix is that though my two horses are so different in shape it fits both!
Anyway the results on the Arab have been astounding. I thought he'd started to feel his age a little over the last few months but clearly it wasn't him but the saddle he'd been wearing. With the Fhoenix he's been transformed. I took him out the other day for only the second time in it and he was a maniac! But in a good way. He felt like a four year old, wanting to power trot and gallop wherever he could. The difference was extraordinary.
And as for me... I love it too. It's the comfiest saddle I've ever sat on. The seat is made of memory foam stuff. When you first get on and its cold it feels a little hard but after ten minutes it's softened up and moulds to the shape of your bum. It seems to retain heat too so your bum stays warm and nestled and despite my Andy doing a huge spook I didn't even shift once in the saddle. Where my Albion always felt hard and a bit slippy under my bum the Fhoenix is the complete opposite - I've never felt so comfy and secure.
I was a bit worried before I tried one for the first time. I've sat on other treeless saddles and found them very wide and unstable but because the Fhoenix has a twist you don't feel like you're riding bareback. My Andy is wide and though you feel like you're sitting wider in the Fhoenix than a treed saddle its not at all uncomfortable for my hips to stretch that teeny bit further. I was also worried my riding would be terrible in the Fhoenix due to lack of tree and stirrup bars being so much further back but the transition from treed to treeless (well part treeless) couldn't have been easier.
Sorry for the long post but I'm so pleased with my Fhoenix that I'm gushing to everyone I know! I'm sure there are people who'd hate it and horses who wouldn't take to it like my two have but for me it's been a huge success. I'd hate to have to go back to a treed saddle now
I'm getitng one at the end of January because rather then buy 2 saddles for the girls that will need to be changed when they change shape I thought about these, I sat on one at HOYS and my god was it gorgeous
Do you reckon I'd be able to get bigger knee rolls put on it or does it put you in that good a position theres no chance of my awful mobile legs creeping forward?
I asked the woman on the tradestand if they did a jumping saddle and she said they did but I haven't seen one on the website, is there a jumping saddle out?
TBH i don't think you'll need bigger knee pads put in because they really do put you in the correct position literally straight away and beacuse of the stirrup bar being so far back its almost impossible for your leg to creep forward.
I'm sure they have got a jumping one out, but don't count me on that.
Please let us know when you get yours i loved to hear how you get on with it!
I have one and I love it. A year down the line and the physio said that my horse's back was perfect, and she's had quite a bit of trouble with it, so i'm so pleased.
The only thing is, the gp version is very straight cut for jumping in. However there is an eventing model coming out, or it might be out, but that's my only fault with it. Other than that, happy horse, happy rider. It's a fab saddle
Yes there is a jumping version on the way... it's not available yet but will be any time soon according to Heather's website. I think a prototype has been made but Heather wanted a few tweaks to the design so met with the designers and they're just putting the finishing touches to it.
It really does put you in such a good position that leg creep is minimal
. The knee blocks provided are velcroed so you can move them about to suit your leg. I've got the GP version at the moment (I've ordered the dressage model too) and being used to riding in dressage saddles I find the GP plenty forward cut enough to hack and jump. However I don't jump anything huge so I imagine if you want to do serious jumping it might not be forward cut enough so waiting for actual Fhoenix jumping saddle might be a good idea.
Do you have the Suber panel GP? Or which one do you have?
And what size did you go for? Does the standard size (think its 17.5- 18") come up big or small?
Yeah I've got the suberpanel GP and the dressage on order is also the suberpanel version. Both prolite and suberpanel versions are great though. I went for the suberpanel because they're supposed to be more stable on wide horses, but it also suits my high withered Arab too! And it hasn't slipped at all on either horse.
It is the standard size I've got. I haven't measured the saddle with a tape but you don't get the traditional one palm between the back of your bum and the cantle. However you don't need it as the weight it distributed much more evenly than a conventional treed saddle. There's plenty of room for me - I'm a size 10-12 with chunky but long thighs.
Heather does a trial system so you can try before you buy. There are representatives in most areas who will come and fit both suberpanel and prolite versions and give you chance to see which you like best.
