Does anyone know of a company that does under surface heating for outdoor arenas - I keep thinking that there must be someone that does such a thing but can't find anyone. After all it is possible to heat football pitches so does anyone do a kit for arenas - If not I'll maybe have to invent one!

can't you google under surface heating and see which companies come up?

I am sure they would do riding arenas.

If we get many more winters like this I think you would have a great business :)

i would love this. the indoor school was so cold today, i dont have an exercise fleece but rode with her full fleece blankey attach and wrapped under my legs for warm up. i took it of very unwillingly before we cantered. i so want heaters.

I know this weather is driving all of us nuts. We still have over a foot of snow here. I googled it as well but I meant under surface heating for an outdoor arena so that you can heat it to defrost it or melt a falling snow. When I googled it I only came up with heating for indoor arenas.
Think you can get such a thing in the US but not over here - or I can't find them. Was looking into putting up an indoor but would cost a fortune so though this might be a slightly cheaper option : )

The easiest way would be to run a pipe from your muck heap and be able to move it about, the warm water should perhaps melt the surface.. (laid on it in the pipe not watered)
There are surfaces that don't freeze however wouldn't that be easier?

Thought about scooshing it with hot water but my arena is pretty huge you would need one hell of a lot of water. We are on top of a hill in Scotland - my surface isn't bad for freezing and stays rideable long after most other arenas round here but once it has frozen and we stay arctic cold here it tends to stay frozen. The main problem though with being so high up though is snow lying on it. (surrently well over a foot sitting on it. Don't want to scrape it off in case I dig my surface up.
I Just thought of the systems that they use under football pitches which work on the same principle as underfloor heating in a house and wonder why no one does such a thing for arenas - if anyone has the know how there has to be a great business there.

we have heated arenas where i ride - it's always at 18 degrees during the winter, which is a lovely temperature to be riding at.

Feels strange when its so cold outside, to then be riding around in a t-shirt! ;)

There was an article I read somewhere about yards in Europe and those that don't have Indoors have Outdoors with Under Surface heating!!! And you can get heaters for water pipes and water troughs so the water stays a constant temperature and doesn't freeze :)

I'm sure it would be lovely however I wouldn't want to be the person who has to pay for the installation - never mind the ongoing running costs!

I think I'll just stick with giving mine a bit of a holiday while the weather is so bad ;)

Exactly! Would probaly cost more than the arena itself :p

If we had this waether for 6 months of the year then yes I would look into something, but for 2 weeks at a time it's just not worth it!

re: Heated water troughs
Will get onto that right away - let you know when they are ready

They are already invented, just don't appear to have reached the UK yet for some bizarre reason apparently. Life would be a pain in the butt without them.:)

Those are the stall sized pails, I have bigger 70 gallon buckets, small pet bowls, floating de-icers.

If they weren't so costly to ship over, and the voltage wasn't different I'd have been shipping them over to the UK years ago. Such a simple solution I can't understand why they are not readily available anyway.

Ok there would be a cost but neighbours have mine have just put in at a cost of 10K an underground heat source for their house and big shed - you have that initial cost but after that your heat is free - that's the sort of thing that I was thinking of - they reckon it would easily heat an arena but the company don't do anything like arenas.
Looked at the cost of putting up an indoor now that really would cost me a fortune that I don't have but I am still convinced that it must be possible to do what I want to do - am going to chat to a company tomorrow that do this for football pitches - keeps them unfrozen and even melts snow - worth a shot - not sure my bank manager will agree :)

Forget heated arenas I think mine would be in seventh heaven with one of these

:D

Help1 you can have one of these and at practically no cost all you do is get a couple of old broom heads and fix them to a sturdy post - you are dead right the horses absolutely love it. Tried it when I had an in foal mare who was getting very itchy and uncomfy but too big to get down and really roll properly - put up a couple of old brush heads in her stable and you could practically hear her sighing as she had a good old rub on them.

Hurrah have found a company that makes covers for football pitches and says that they do ones for arenas will find out more tomorrow and see if I would need a lottery win or to rob a bank to get one! will let you all know

Result - had an interesting conversation with a company today and they are coming for a site visit next week - they do a cover for outdoor arenas which stops them freezing up to -4 or -5 and if it is colder you use a blow heater and heat it to make a big blow up pillow idea which defrosts the surface under it. If it snows then you can simple drive over it with a tractor scoop the snow off then wind the cover in and bobs your uncle the surface is usable.
They do a fully automated cover which sounds fab but costs a small kings ransom - sounds brill you just press a button and the cover glides on or off - however they also do a manual version which while still a fair amount of money is a lot more reasonable
So nothing ventured nothing gained he's coming to look at my school which is a fair size but says should be no problem fitting one.
I know there are all sorts of rules here about advertising on this forum so if anyone is interested and want to know who they are etc then pm me.
I'm off to smash up the piggy bank see what's in it :)
