Hi All, sorry this may end up being quite long....about a month ago I was hacking my horse out and she had a couple of episodes of coughing 3-4 coughs. It coincided with her eating some hay she shouldn't have had so I put it down to that but then a couple of days later I noticed she was "sucking" in at her flanks when breathing, no wheezing, no nasal discharge. She lives out and I started soaking her hay. The vet was coming to do her vaccination anyway so she checked her over, listened to her lungs said she could hear her breathing but no rattling etc no temp but her respiration was a little raised so gave her a tub of ventipulmin which lasted 2 weeks. She finished that last week and I wouldn't say she is any different at all so I have switched to giving her haylage instead of hay to see if that helps. She lives at home and I haven't heard her cough in the field but she is still "sucking" in the same way she was. I haven't ridden her since the vet came as was worried of putting extra strain on her but wonder if I should?
She is 15 this year a lightweight 14.1 cob and I've had her 10 years, this is the first time she has had any health issues so it makes me worry more I think and not having any experience with respiratory issues before not sure the best thing to do.
I'm wondering if perhaps it could be heaves having done some googling?
I have contacted the vets again and they were supposed to be calling me back but not heard anything yet so will call again Monday.
Just to add she is fine in every other way, she is bright and eating fine etc
