Can anyone recommend a good/reasonably priced heavy turnout rug for when the tempertaure drops? Particularly for a horse thats turning into a rug destroyer (brand new 3 week old rug already has two small tears!)
I'm a fan of Saxon rugs for my cob mare, they're the only cheap and cheerful combo rug that are roomy enough for her neck and shoulders. They're fairly deep in the body too, so wrap around under her belly a bit. Quite hard wearing, and very reasonably priced, perfect for horses that get through rugs quickly! x
I have a couple of Premier Equine full neck rugs (attached neck), they're a bit old now but have never leaked, have no rips in either of them (shouldn't have said that!) and are really warm. Also have stainless steel fittings. They're really deep, although a bit on the big side, if I were in the market for a new one, I'd probably go down a size.
Two minor things though, they're heavy and the older version I have, not sure about the new ones, had elastic on the surcingles, nice idea but not very strong, so when the first one broke and the next one started to go I had the elastic taken off and no more problems.
If I ever need to get a new horse a wardrobe, I'll be getting one of their Trio jobbies for sure.
Ah ive been looking at mark todd one and also weatherbeeta orian. He's managed to get two holes in his amigo medium weight already, so needs to be hardy!
I would recomend the Jumpers Horse Line heavyweight. Relatively cheap and very durable. Filling tends to flatten over the years but outside is still very tough.
