I have a new show cob arriving at the weekend, and I am just off out to buy rugs.

He is a good doer but has a hunter clip, legs in, and a hogged mane. What rugs should I buy?

I have seen a fleece combo, which I think would be a good under rug. But what weight top rug? I was thinking medium??? Or should I go heavy given the weather?

What styles/ makes do you think good for chunky shoulders?

I only want to buy one stable rug initially until I get him home, and then will know better about what fits and what doesnt.

At the mo he is wearing 2 stable rugs day time with a 3rd on overnight. No idea what weight they are but the feel thin.

Hello, my cob has a trace clip. Shes very chunky and has amigo rugs. I have a LW for her which she has been in up until all this snow and cold and now shes in a MW. Last year she was fine in just a MW. If not I will layer up the LW with MW. I do have a HW too but she didn't need it last year.
 
My cobs both have a blanket clip the overweight cob lives in her 100g weatherbeeta rug with full neck and the other cob who feels the cold more is in her 200g Amigo rug with removable neck cover. Both seem happy in these and it's about minus 5 here at night. As above post I do have heavier weight rugs, when it was minus 12 last year they had 220g rugs on and were both warm in them and living out in the snow.
 
I have a hw cob and have also found weatherbeeta are the best fit for a chunky horse.
My chap does not feel the cold, and like yours has a hunter clip and hog. As of yet I have not needed to buy anything beyond a medium weight, whether indoor or outdoor.
 
We have a couple of Masta's which fit well.

Try get rugs with gussets in the shoulders, not always easy to find...but worth it as it gives them a bit more movement in the shoulders and they don't rub as much.
 
I would get a medium weight and a heavy weight breathable turnout rug that will double up as stable rugs as well as a fleece.

I find Fal (the old style ones) and Weatherbeeta Orican's fit chunky horses best.
 
my lw show cob has a middleweight and heavy weight rug on, there are both mark todd as they offer the best fit.

He has just been clipped completely though. I would suggest just putting a heavy weight rug on :-)

I have been and spent far too much money.

I bought a fleece with a neck, a 220g stable rug and a 350g turn out.

Plan is to use the fleece and the stable rug together in this weather (-2) and then if it warms up a bit, just the 220g and if we go down to -15 or something like that I can stick the turnout over the top of everything.

Does this sound like a good plan.
