Hi Folks,

My friend has asked me to clip her driving pony next weekend but she doesn’t have a very thick turnout rug suitable for this freezing weather we are having. Can anyone recommend a super warm combo type rug that has at least 360g fill if not more. Budget is approx 80GBP on a good quality rug for the pony but she may be persuaded to spend more if there is a good deal to be had on a more expensive rug.

I said I would look on the internet but a lot of rugs I have looked at start at 5ft 6” upwards and the pony ranges don’t seem to go much above 300g filling. Brands I have looked at are Weatherbeeta and Shires. The W/B Orican heavweight 360g looks good, does anyone have this rug, if so what do you think of it?

Any recommendations/websites we can look at would be much appreciated.

i have a pony the same size, i have found the best rug i have ever bought is a bucas smartex (500g of lovely warmness). I also have a shires HW but prefer the bucas

I have the w/b orican 360g fill for George, not in 5'3 mind you, his is 6'6! I think it is a really good rug, George has got a short but chunky neck but for once the neck cover is really generous :) it also has a really big tail flap that comes nearly half way down his tail. There is also a cleaver padded wither pad, attachments all fully adjustable and the leg straps are elastic for safety :) I bought mine at the start of last winter and it still looks like new and has never leaked :)

How about this?

When i needed a very warm rug for sick pony, i got a l/w and a sleeping bag and got the rug cleaning people to cut and stitch the sleeping bag inside.
Did not cost hardly anything and the warmest rug you will ever get

Hi all,

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.

I managed to find her a Horseware Horseware Rhino Pony Plus Heavy (370g) with neck for 99GBP including delivery. So a little more than she wanted to spend but hopefully it will last and be up to the job of keeping him warm once clipped.

Sounds like the Orican gets the thumps up then :) I think I will get my horse one as a spare as I found some at a pretty good price online.

Festive Folly Cat,

Thats the exact same rug! except hers comes in tan/black. What a bargain!
I have some Horseware rugs for my girl and they have been very good rugs, one of them is over 10 years old and still going strong

Gally,

Are you really impressed with the Bucas rug then? I have put a Rambo Optimo on my Xmas list but actually the reviews are not so great. And I am after a new extra heavy turnout myself so a 500g would be FAB. Does yours come with a neck? I will have to go check out the website me thinks :)

I've just bought 2 of these, one 5'6 and one 5'9. They are 2000 outer denier & 420g fill, I bought a size bigger in each because I am hoping they'll do my yearlings next winter too. I'd never heard of them before but I must say I am very, very impressed with them, I didn't buy them off ebay but have found them on there for you to have a look at:

Another recommendation for the Mark Todd Heavyweight Combo. I have them for two of my boys. They are very well designed, nice and deep, the neck cover goes up to the tips of their ears and they have a gusset between the neck cover and the main part of the rug which stops them being rubbed when they bend to graze.

Shop around as prices tend to vary considerably.
