Heavyweight rug already?!

Mine were in rain sheets yesterday, as it was chucking it down and they still have summer coats, so were feeling it. Old mare had a mw on last night, because she isn't well, and needs a bit of extra help, and the two boys had LW's on, because I knew it was going chuck down again overnight. Today, the sun is shining although its chilly, and they are naked. I like to think that I rug according to their specific needs. I do hate this time of year though, when I feel like i'm faffing around constantly with rugs. Alf will stay naked if the weather report is dry for tonight, and Spike will only have a rug on because of the big hole in his neck!

the point is though that yes,99% of horses could do with less rugs IF they were allowed and encouraged from the first nippy day of autumn, to grow a big thick winter coat.

i aint paying through the nose to stand and admire fur balls cavorting round the field...........

Unfortunately I am doing just that this year because the old git has decided he doesn't want to be sound any more - sigh - however the other one will be clipped and rugged accordingly.

I feel really sorry for the genuinely over rugged horses. I guess am lucky mine don't really need much in the way of rugging, 100g was the heaviest one of mine got to, the other 50g and neither are natives.
