for a very large 17.2hh chap he's not partuclarly heavy but there is a lot of him- his Shires rug has lasted him 5 years and has now seen better days and is looking a bit tatty.

I'm looking for something that is fairly cheap price, but deep fitting and cut nicely riund the shoulders. Preferably at least 360gram weight as he is fully clipped.

Was thinking of another Shires stable rug or maybe Weatherbeeta?

where is the best place to buy from?

Thank you very much!

I have an amazing Shires heavyweight stable rug with full neck, I cannot remember exactly what oz it is but its higher then your usual. I paid about £60/£70 from Ingatestone saddley about 2 years ago. It's the first Shires rug I have owned and is the best stable rug I have ever had, fits my boy amazingly and its still in one piece. A PE turnout is on my shopping list now though as have had a lot of good feedback!

I got a Prem Equine fleece for my big boy and it wouldn't do up round his neck, fantastic rug but didn't matter how I tried to squeeze him into it it just wouldn't fit, think of Cinderella and the slipper, I sooo wanted the rug and I was the ugly sister! Sent it back and tried 2 more in bigger sizes but same problem, it was the neck that was cut to the same pattern just the rugs got longer in the back....

Oh well, my chap has a GFS stable rug, see my post above about the fleece, with shoulder darts and that fits brilliantly I also like the quick release clips, I would always look for rugs with shoulder darts from now on as above I find that Weatherbeeta fit him well, turnouts etc and don't break the bank, look on equestrianclearance.com Cheers!

My mares have Weatherbeeta Belmont 300 stable rugs, they come with a full neck (combo) or an excellent standard cut. They're deep, lightweight but very warm, have good tail flaps and shoulder pleats though I'd prefer a quick fastening to the twin buckle front straps. My 14hh Welsh D is into her 9th full winter in this rug, it's professionally washed each summer but has never needed a repair and is still in new condition. She's clipped out and only on the most bitter nights has she worn an under rug. I don't like WB turnouts but can't speak highly enough of these stable rugs.

I think the Masta Regal has a similar 'collar' effect on the standard neck, I haven't seen their full-neck version. Fal are excellent too but I don't think Horseware stable rugs are as good as their turnouts.

I agree with the above. WB stable rugs are the best, they fit nicely and the neck isn't constricting like some. They are warm and cosy. My horse has a full clip and she is toasty in hers. They also clean up like new if you have them professionally cleaned at the end of the winter (the combo is too big to go in a washing machine, even a Dyson).

There are a full range of sizes on ebay.

Many thanks to you all so far for your suggestions- very interesting, the WB, PE, Masta all seem to get good feedback, so tomorrow when I'm not so busy I will look into all of your suggestions and decide which one to buy him. I know my horse will be pleased with a new rug! will let you know what I decide and maybe post a picture of him in his new shiny rug!

Thanks again- much appreciated.

I have these rugs - both on my chunky gypsy cob and our old clydesdale who was only 16.3 and our new girl who is 17 hands and still growing.

Excellent value for money and very good if you have mats as the outer is fairly waterproof and does not stain easily. They also do very large sizes. These rugs are a good fit, generous neck, and have not rubbed.

Mine are now on their third year and still look like new.

Many thanks for your suggestion- sounds excellent- I will defintily look into that as a) my horse although he has a deep bed has matting as well so he can be a bit of a "rug thug" at times and b) he does have Clydesdale in him too! although he is not heavyweight the rug may suit him well.

Thanks thats great!

Jen1 - you're not the only one. I bought the PE fleece and had real issues with it. Luckily mine is skinny so I simply don't do up the top check fastener otherwise he'd be strangled.
However have just bought a PE t/o for my pony and it's fine.
Maybe it is just the fleeces.
